Impostor Syndrome

Impostor Syndrome We’re a creative multimedia and digital marketing agency. 🖤 Spoiler alert: all of our projects start with somebody saying ‘Hey! So, we started One on One. Ten.

Wouldn’t it be cool if…?’

Like the time we thought it would be nice if there was a music website whose sole purpose was just to shout about really good music. (That was ten years ago. And, since then, our little music and culture website has reached literally millions of people. We don’t know about you, but we think that’s pretty cool.) Then, we realised that we might be able to use our skills to

help other people with their needs. So, we began offering our services to a few of our favourite digital organisations - and, before we knew it, our team’s work had been featured across the BBC, MTV, the Guardian, The Line Of Best Fit, and HuffPost. And then? Well, that’s when things started getting out of control. Before we knew it, our web design team had drawn up gorgeous websites for legendary record labels, digital publications, and uber-cool alternative musicians. And our in-house brand incubator ended up producing one of the music industry’s most respected magazine websites. From there, we began wondering what else we could do. We’d learned how to manage a scalable, global brand, and picked up more than our fair share of digital marketing tips and tricks along the way. So, we reached out to a select few friendly faces - and before we knew it, we found ourselves in charge of all things marketing and digital for some of our favourite record labels, startups, and producers. We’d built brilliant brands and worked with some of our favourite people to market products we love. And, after a while, we couldn’t help but notice that we’d picked up a few nuggets of wisdom about the music industry. So, for us, there was only one logical next step: the world of music management. That’s when we took on our very first management client, Soham De. He’s a ridiculously talented singer-songwriter and you’re going to be hearing a lot more about him over the next few months. And that’s us. We’re Impostor Syndrome and we’ve interviewed global superstars and political figureheads; penned hundreds of reviews, interviews, and feature pieces; and designed a bunch of digital bits on the Internet that we happen to think are pretty flippin’ cool. Oh, and most importantly? We’re still not done.

lavender are Oskar Rice and Adam Jackson; friends since school, one a DJ/producer, one in an indie band, their burgeoning friendship saw them bonding over Elliot Smith as much as J Dilla. Their debut EP garnered praise and appreciation, with lead single peppermint currently on 22 million Spotify streams. The recently released lowlight:slowlight won a plethora of support from Clash, Wonderland, The Line Of Best Fit, DMY, BBC 6Music and more.

Their new album, we're having a barn dance, is the story of one tumultuous year of living, loving (and the falling out thereof). The songwriting is a diary of an eventful 12 months. “We had a big chat about what this all means to us,” explains Oskar, “And we boiled it down to this: it’s about love, but not necessarily romantic love. It’s about all of those competing emotions and how, if you love one thing, it might detract from loving something else.”

we’re having a barn dance is both literally and metaphorically their one year safari of discovery, starting in a farmhouse in France through to a studio behind Lidl in Limehouse. “I think the album for me feels like a journey,” explains Adam. “I was definitely fixated on this multifaceted concept of ‘home’ throughout the writing process. It seems to start with a departure and sets in motion an attempt to try and locate, then return to, an ever-evolving sense of home. Which is interesting as I was couch-surfing for the bulk of the time we were writing the album, living across so many different homes. Oskar and I gave each other permission to use the shared project as a personal outlet. And making it was entwined with a process of self-reckoning and was helpful in a way that I hadn’t experienced from music before.”

“We were pretty perfectionist,” says Oskar. “Took a while tweaking everything and making it right. And it really documents, I think, that year in a really nice way.”

Due 28 February, A Paradise In The Hold is an album of yearning. It’s about Yazz’s dual heritage, drawing on traditional music and folklore as well as her own personal experience as a British-Bahraini woman. A sweeping epic where tradition meets innovation, she melds ancient rhythms with contemporary musicianship. The record is a tribute to the sorrowful songs of Bahrain’s pearl divers, the strength of Arab women, and the celebratory rhythms of women's traditional drumming circles, while also telling the story of Yazz’s own decade-long voyage of self-discovery.

The album also marks Yazz’s first foray into writing lyrics, in both English and Arabic, bringing a new dimension to her expansive sound. The project features an impressive roster of collaborators, including vocalists Natacha Atlas, Brigitte Beraha, and percussionist Corrina Silvester. An Ivor Novello Award-winning composer and one of the most innovative trumpet players of her generation, with A Paradise In The Hold, Yazz Ahmed delivers a groundbreaking fusion of tradition and innovation, creating a contemporary jazz project that is set to make a lasting impact on the genre.

lavender are Oskar Rice and Adam Jackson. Friends since school, one a DJ/producer, one in an indie band, their burgeoning friendship saw them bonding over Elliot Smith as much as J Dilla. Their debut EP garnered praise and appreciation, with lead single 'peppermint’ currently sitting on 22 million Spotify streams. Worldwide FM and NTS were hugely supportive, as were BBC 6 Music stalwart Cerys Matthews and Jack Saunders, and Nels Hylton at BBC Radio 1.

The writing of lowlight:slowlight was driven by a desire to experiment more with sampling, deconstructing Adam’s demo and treating it like another piece of the audio jigsaw. “I sent Oskar this layered recording and he flipped what I’d made into this beat,” says Adam. “I remember listening to it on the way to the studio and thinking this is crazy, when we finished it. There was a moment where we felt like we’d just unlocked this feeling and it was like that song just fell out the sky. We were both hyped because it was the best thing we’d ever made and the new benchmark of what this music could be.”
