Editor .lyons speaks with Hala Alyan about her book I’ll Tell You When I’m Home (Saqi Books), a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for memoir or autobiography.
The memoir, in part tracing the journey to her daughter’s birth via surrogacy, is also an act of surrogacy on Hala’s part. The work weaves vignettes of her life - of addiction, co-dependency, parenthood, exile, displacement, home - but in doing so Hala is a vessel for generations’ stories and bears witness on behalf of us all.
