Editor .lyons speaks with Hala Alyan about her book I’ll Tell You When I’m Home (Saqi Books), a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for memoir or autobiography.

The memoir, in part tracing the journey to her daughter’s birth via surrogacy, is also an act of surrogacy on Hala’s part. The work weaves vignettes of her life - of addiction, co-dependency, parenthood, exile, displacement, home - but in doing so Hala is a vessel for generations’ stories and bears witness on behalf of us all.

A week ago, four Palestine Action activists became the first people in Britain sentenced as terrorists for damaging property through direct action.

The jury, who convicted them of the ordinary charge of criminal damage, were not informed by the judge Justice Johnson that a ‘terrorist connection’ would be introduced at sentencing as an aggravating factor, pushing their sentences towards the upper limit of the custodial sentence possible for this charge.

Editor .lyons documents solidarity outside their sentencing at Woolwich Crown Court, on 12th June 2026, including a Defend Our Juries mass protest, as Sam, Ellie, Lottie and Fatema Zainab were told that time in prisons was now to devour almost a decade of each of their lives.
