Do electronic dance music and Mondrian's neoplasticism have anything in common? I believe they do! They're both expressions of creativity and, at the same time, they heavily rely on structure and balance. This might sound like a contradiction but it is not! Creativity and structure enhance each other. Operating within the constraints dictated by a self-imposed system forces the artist to explore and find more creative ways to express their message despite the constraints. I associate the geometric shapes in Mondrian's work with the structure of an EDM track - its metric with phrases, bars, and beats, the alternation of breakdowns, build-ups, and drops. And I see the primary colors in Mondrian's work as the melody or the sound samples used to color the base structure of an EDM track. Also, Mondrian used rhythm in his work to express universal and dynamic qualities. In the same way, EDM artists use rhythm to create a sense of energy and excitement. In a way, we could say the same for all music genres; but in EDM this is somehow even more visible. This might be partly because artists know their works will be mixed, transitioned, mashed-up and that encourages them to follow structure so that their tracks are "compatible" with others. But also because heavy reliance on digital tools during the entire production process in itself encourages structure.
And apparently Mondrian was actually inspired by rhythm found in dancing the Foxtrot and listening to jazz!
As a disclaimer, I'm a DJ and I'm neither an art expert nor an EDM producer but I do love EDM music and contemporary art. When I saw this painting at the Tate Modern yesterday, I immediately made the association with EDM music and it made me think about how much I love creativity and structure and how well they work together.
