THIS WEEK IN STEM CLUB ⚡
Earthquake Tower Challenge

The children became structural engineers and designed their own ‘earthquake-resistant’ towers using toothpicks and marshmallows. Once their structures were complete, we put them to the test! Each tower was placed on top of jelly, which we shook to recreate the movement of the ground during an earthquake. The children observed whether their tower stayed standing, wobbled or collapsed.

We explored how the shape, base and structure of a building can affect its strength and stability. The children discovered that a wider, well-supported base and shapes such as triangles can help make structures stronger.

THIS WEEK IN STEM CLUB ⚡
We made electricity with playdough! 💡

The children explored how circuits work by creating their own playdough models and adding LED lights. They also discovered that playdough can conduct electricity and that the LEDs need a complete circuit (and to be the right way round!) to light up.

There was lots of experimenting, problem-solving, testing, rebuilding and plenty of “IT WORKED!” moments 🙌🏾

Because STEM isn’t just about getting the right answer, it’s about being curious enough to keep trying.

Sometimes all the “why’s?” can get a bit much. But every question, experiment and failed first attempt is helping children learn how to think, explore and solve problems.

We want children to know that STEM isn’t about always getting the right answer. It’s about being curious enough to ask questions, try things out and discover what happens.

So keep encouraging those endless questions, you never know where they might lead!

I was inspired by this activity after my yoga teacher training anatomy class last weekend, where we were challenged to recreate the respiratory system using whatever objects we could find around the yoga studio 🫁

Plants became the lungs, a blanket became the diaphragm and everyday objects mapped out the airways and structures involved in breathing.

It was a simple activity, but such a brilliant way to think about what is actually happening inside our bodies every time we take a breath. It got me thinking, this would make a great STEM challenge for children! 🔬

TRY IT AT HOME:
Give your child 5–10 minutes to find objects around the house and challenge them to build their own model of the respiratory system.
Can they identify the:
- Lungs
- Trachea
- Bronchi
- Diaphragm

Then ask them: What happens to our lungs and diaphragm when we breathe in and out?
No fancy science kit needed, just a little creativity and curiosity.

Because STEM really is everywhere… even in a yoga class!
