In a previous life when I ran a couple of record labels I was often compiling and releasing mix CD compilations. Thatโs when I learned the art of negotiating and licensing tracks.
Later in my career I moved into Brand Design & Curation, supporting the launch of large advertising campaigns for hospitality, often when there were menu changes, special offers and NYE events. And thatโs an expertise I have developed over the years..
Brainstorming starts opens the flow to creative conversation. And then the listening process begins.
Do I check the vaults, listen to new music or ask a music producer from my โblack bookโ whether theyโd be up for producing a commissioned track for a campaign I am working on?
Usually thereโs near to no budget. Itโs definitely not what days gone by Moby received for the Car ads or what Bicep have been receiving in recent years. 9 times out of 10, Iโm pulling favours with music labels or artists I know, always with the understanding theyโll get name checked during the campaign. Itโs subliminal advertising for them too, in a way. Tricky but I always believe the reciprocity culture comes good in the end.
The brand reputation is always on the line with what theyโre trying to say and sell. So attention to detail is always paramount, crucially the music that accompanies the story.
Itโs a fascinating process and itโs something we at HSL have done for many brands. Nothing beats the buzz of finding the perfect track for whatever campaign, matching the beat, tempo and vibe to compliment the visual aspect and feeling the reaction as it finally reaches the ears of the public.
