In May 1945, as British soldiers advanced through northern Germany, they were confronted with a harrowing scene. Survivors of the Neuengamme Death Marches lay scattered along country roads, in ditches, and on the outskirts of villages. Emaciated and trembling with exhaustion, these men and women had endured weeks of forced marches, collapsing where their strength failed. Liberation came not at the gate of a camp, but in fragments: soldiers hoisted the dying into trucks, squeezed water onto their parched lips, and offered comforting words.
Every breath in those moments was a fragile triumph. The survivors stared at their liberators in disbelief, some unable to form words, others trembling with gratitude.
