As a U.S. military jet flew overhead during the formal arrival ceremony at Joint Base Andrews, President Donald Trump was seen visibly wincing, while Xi Jinping appeared much more composed. The moment quickly became a viral talking point across social media.

Beyond the funny moment, the bigger story is the significance of the visit: Washington and Beijing are discussing major issues involving trade, technology, Taiwan, Tehran and the future of U.S.–China relations.

🌏 The Himalayas: A Growing Natural Disaster Risk?

Deadly flooding along the China–Nepal border has once again highlighted the extreme risks faced by communities living in the Himalayas.

More than 600 people have reportedly died, while thousands remain missing as rescue and recovery efforts continue. At the same time, China, India and Nepal are rapidly expanding infrastructure across the region, including dams, tunnels, highways, railways and bridges.

There is no indication that the latest disaster was caused by this development, but experts say the growing infrastructure footprint raises important questions about disaster preparedness, environmental risks, early-warning systems and cross-border cooperation.

The Himalayas remain one of the world’s most challenging and unpredictable environments. As development continues, safety and responsible planning will be increasingly important.
