One of the world’s most inspiring novelists on AI, originality, and the power of silence.

…and beyond her extraordinary achievements (I've listed only a few), what stayed with me was Kate’s unwavering strength, verticality of thought, and creative genius that fills the room.
💫 My interview with Kate Mosse, author of Labyrinth, Citadel, The Burning Chambers and The Ghost Ship, is now live! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtCK1LNinGM
Driving 3 hours from Essex to Chichester to meet her in person was more than worth it — I had a full hour to ask all the questions I’d carried since reading two of her Languedoc bestsellers.
We spoke about the discipline of writing, the stories of women most often erased from history, and the importance of opening your heart to silence — so that imagination can flow with ease and with deep-rooted vibrations of meaning and freedom of thought.
When asked about AI’s role in publishing, Kate responded without hesitation:
“𝐈𝐧 𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐀𝐈 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐟𝐭.”
I’m resonating with her brave take on this complex and increasingly abundant topic — one marked by both rising danger and perceived valeur.
Her reference to AI as “theft” is not only moral language in action, but an awareness calling.
When AI models are trained on copyrighted works without consent or compensation, they absorb human creativity — styles, metaphors, voices — and remix them into new outputs.
In that sense, Kate implies: “𝐀𝐈 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧, 𝐢𝐭 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬.”
Writers spend decades refining a voice that’s then scraped into a dataset in seconds. It’s the devaluation of creative labour we need to confront — and regulate — if we wish to preserve the most vital bloodstream of the human creative body: the originality juice.
A few key moments I couldn’t help jotting down:
[03:15] Our traditional podcast question: the 3 words Kate Mosse chose to describe herself
[07:18] “If there’s something you want to read and it’s not there — write it yourself.”
[14:51] “You need silence for your imagination to be loud.”
[23:45] “I know how to make a book successful.”
[29:12] “In publishing - AI is theft.”
