History In Focus: The Hajj, 1973
With the Hajj season now under way, it is a good moment to reflect on how the Hajj journeys looked half a century ago. Today's clip shows international pilgrims arriving in Saudi Arabia on their journey to Mecca in 1973. For Muslims, Hajj is a spiritual obligation to be undertaken at least once in a lifetime if circumstances allow.

The clip captures crowds of pilgrims, most in white robes, travelling by planes, boats, and coaches to fulfil their religious duty. Judging by those coaches, the travel was less comfortable then, but apart from that, much of the experience itself appears remarkably unchanged.

Cairo's Chaotic Traffic 🚗🚗🚚
With sunny weather forecast and a national holiday in the UK on Monday, there is much talk in the news about possible traffic jams this weekend. This prompted me to select a clip of a traffic jam in Cairo.

Cairo has a reputation for chaotic, intimidating and loud traffic. But, unlike many other cities with congestion problems, its traffic keeps moving thanks to drivers adopting new tactics. They ignore traffic rules and regulations, giving advantage to a "more holistic approach", communicating with each other directly - mainly using direct eye contact and honking horns.

Perhaps we could take this as a warning - if something is not done about traffic jams, driving vigilantes could take over the world.

Everyday History: Vintage film of Beirut markets, 1968
Today's clip is an extract from a travelogue called 'Lebanon - Three Hundred Sunny Days' made in 1968 by Harold Baim, showing a colourful market in Beirut.

Middle Eastern markets are world famous for their vibrancy, chaos and haggling. They were centres of public life in the cities throughout the Middle East and North Africa for millennia and are still going strong. So, what's the attraction? A feast for all the senses is guaranteed, and the chance of a good bargain appeals to me!
