Rest in Power, President Salva Kiir Mayardit (1951–2025)

Salva Kiir Mayardit (1951–2025) was a South Sudanese politician and revolutionary leader who served as the first President of South Sudan after its independence from Sudan in 2011. Born on September 13, 1951, in Akon, Warrap State (then part of Anglo-Egyptian Sudan), Kiir joined the southern resistance against the Khartoum government early in his life, becoming a key figure in the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A) under Dr. John Garang.

After Garang died in a helicopter crash in 2005, Kiir succeeded him as leader of the SPLM and became President of the Government of Southern Sudan, a semi-autonomous region within Sudan. He played a crucial role in negotiating the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), which paved the way for South Sudan's independence.

On July 9, 2011, Kiir became the first President of the Republic of South Sudan after an overwhelming vote for secession in a referendum. However, his presidency was marred by political instability, corruption allegations, and a brutal civil war that began in December 2013 after a fallout with his deputy, Riek Machar. The conflict led to widespread suffering, displacement, and economic collapse.

Despite multiple peace agreements, including the 2018 Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS), Kiir's government struggled to achieve lasting stability. He remained in office until his passing on May 14, 2025, leaving behind a complicated legacy as both a liberation hero and a leader who presided over one of Africa's most troubled nations.

Condolence Message

Today, we mourn the passing of President Salva Kiir Mayardit, a pivotal figure in South Sudan's history. While his leadership faced challenges, his role in securing South Sudan's independence remains undeniable. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, the people of South Sudan, and all who were impacted by his life and legacy. May his soul rest in peace, and may South Sudan find unity and prosperity in the years ahead.

Rest in Power, President Salva Kiir Mayardit (1951–2025)

Tensions Rise in Malakal: Defence Minister Accused of Fueling Ethnic Clashes

Malakal, Upper Nile State – April 13, 2025

Tensions have escalated in Malakal Town following allegations that the Minister of Defence, Hon. Chol Thon, has instructed members of his ethnic group, the Dinka Ngok, to launch attacks against the Nuer community in the area.

Sources close to the situation report that Hon. Chol Thon held a high-level meeting recently, after which he allegedly ordered the commander of Division One to arm civilians from the Ngok community, stretching from Gelachel to Baliet County headquarters. These actions are believed to be contributing to growing instability in the region.

Meanwhile, Lt. Gen. James Koang Chol Ranley, the current Governor of Upper Nile State, is reportedly making efforts to de-escalate tensions and restore calm in Malakal. Despite his attempts at mediation and peacebuilding, challenges remain, particularly with reports that Hon. Chol Thon continues to encourage and arm his tribesmen, allegedly in an effort to disrupt the fragile peace in the state.

Many local leaders and residents have expressed concern about the deteriorating situation and are calling for immediate intervention from the national government and international partners to prevent further violence.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of Uganda is expected to visit Juba tomorrow, Thursday, 3rd April, 2025. He and his CDF son, Muhoozi, should give peace a chance by withdrawing their UPDF. And if he is still a guarantor of the R-ARCSS, he should tell the SPLM-IG to free all the detainees.
