Context: This incident took place in Kanaighat, Sylhet, where a dispute over a football match reportedly escalated into violence.
You might agree or disagree with my opinion, and I respect that. But let me say this today. I am writing this post on 1 June 2026.
I do not want this to be true, but based on what we see around us every day, I believe that violence in Bangladesh is unlikely to disappear or even fall to a very low level over the next 10 years. Sadly, the problem seems to run much deeper than politics, laws, or governments alone. It is also rooted in our attitudes, behaviour, and culture.
Just look at this video. Forget the background of the dispute for a moment and focus on what actually happened. A man carrying a large stick calmly and brutally struck a peaceful, unarmed person on the head in front of hundreds of people. The victim could easily have died on the spot.
Whether viewed from a religious or non-religious perspective, such an act is completely unacceptable. Yet we are often the same people who speak about peace, morality, humanity, and social values.
This is not an isolated incident. Similar acts of violence occur across the country on a regular basis. Sometimes it is over politics, sometimes over land, sometimes over personal disputes, and in this case, reportedly over a football match. The reason may change, but the willingness to use violence remains.
We often condemn violence when it happens in other countries. We criticize nations that attack innocent people and ask how human beings can treat one another in such a way. But when violence happens within our own communities, among neighbours, villagers, friends, or people from the same religion and background, we are often less willing to confront the problem honestly.
So where is our humanity in these moments? Where is our moral responsibility? Where is the religious awareness that teaches patience, mercy, self-control, and respect for human life?
A peaceful society cannot be built through slogans, social media posts, or speeches alone. It is built when ordinary people choose not to harm others, even when they are angry. It is built when communities reject violence instead of excusing it. It is built when we teach the next generation that disagreements should be resolved through dialogue, not through fists, sticks, or weapons.
Until we make our own minds more peaceful and learn to reject violence against the people around us, we cannot build a peaceful community. And without peaceful communities across Bangladesh, violence will never truly stop.
Violence is not defeated only by stronger laws. It is defeated when people themselves decide that hurting another human being is never the answer.
