A new forecast suggests a typical household energy bill could rise by around £442 in January, potentially taking the annual bill to about £2,165.

That would represent a rise of roughly 26%, driven largely by higher wholesale energy costs and low gas storage levels across Europe.

There is already another increase coming in October, when the typical annual bill is expected to rise to around £1,723.

The Government has introduced measures intended to reduce pressure on households, including removing VAT from electricity bills from October. But the latest forecast suggests rising wholesale prices could quickly outweigh those savings.

Ministers are considering further targeted help for households on lower incomes, including changes to existing support schemes.

For families already struggling with food, mortgage or rent costs, another sharp rise in energy bills could add further pressure this winter.

Could Britain be heading for another household energy crisis? 👇

Sending one migrant back to France under the UK’s “one in, one out” deal is costing taxpayers around £56,000. 🇬🇧🇫🇷

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood revealed the figure while answering questions from MPs.

The cost is higher than the previous estimate of around £45,000–£50,000 per person. Since the scheme began, more than 1,400 people have been returned to France, while a similar number have been transferred to the UK through the reciprocal arrangement.

The Government argues that the scheme can still be justified because the cost of returning someone is comparable with, or potentially lower than, the cost of accommodating an asylum seeker in a hotel for a year.

But the numbers have raised fresh questions about the value and scale of the arrangement — particularly as the 1,400 returns represent only around 4% of the people who have crossed the Channel by small boat since the scheme began.

The current UK-France agreement is also due to expire at the end of the month, with uncertainty over what happens next.

Is £56,000 per return a reasonable price for the deal — or is the system costing taxpayers too much? 👇

The UK is developing new military capabilities designed to counter growing threats in space, with Russia and China increasingly viewed as major challenges.

The plans reportedly include technologies such as satellite jamming, cyber operations and potentially directed-energy systems capable of disrupting or disabling hostile space assets. Specific details are being kept secret for security reasons.

The concern goes far beyond military satellites. Britain relies heavily on space-based systems for GPS, communications, navigation and other critical infrastructure, meaning disruption in orbit could have consequences here on Earth.

The UK has announced plans to expand its military space capabilities by 2035, backed by £7.8 billion in investment, including £880 million over four years for intelligence and space-control capabilities.

The development comes after the United States publicly confirmed that it has already deployed space-control weapons in orbit, adding another layer to the growing competition between major powers.

Is space becoming the next major front in global security? 👇

Millions of pensioners were facing a worrying tax question — and now the Government has stepped in. 🇬🇧

The full new State Pension is expected to rise above £13,000 a year next April after the latest earnings figures showed wages growing by 3.9%.

The problem is that the current personal tax allowance stands at £12,570. Without action, the rise could have pushed some pensioners over the income-tax threshold for the first time.

But ministers have now pledged that pensioners who rely solely on their State Pension will not be hit with extra tax or the administrative burden of dealing with small tax bills during this Parliament.

Not everyone will benefit. Pensioners with other sources of income, including some private pensions or additional payments, could still face tax depending on their circumstances.

The full new State Pension is currently £241.30 a week and could rise to around £250.70, taking annual payments to roughly £13,036.

So the big question is:

Has Labour protected pensioners from an unfair tax squeeze — or has it simply created a complicated new system? 👇

Under new Labour rules, employers will face tougher requirements when dealing with staff requests for flexible working, including working from home.

Businesses will be expected to properly discuss requests with employees in person and give clear reasons when a request is refused. The government says the changes are designed to make sure flexible-working requests are genuinely considered rather than treated as a box-ticking exercise.

Employees already have the legal right to request flexible working, but the changes do not create an automatic right to work from home.

The reforms are part of Labour’s wider Employment Rights Act, which also includes measures such as day-one sick pay, stronger parental protections and restrictions on fire-and-rehire practices.

Supporters say the changes could give workers more flexibility and a stronger voice over how they work. Business groups, however, have raised concerns about additional costs and bureaucracy.

Should bosses have more freedom to decide where staff work — or should employees have a stronger right to work from home? 👇
