Africa’s Grand Celebration Returns — The 2026 African Persons Of The Year Awards

The African Persons of the Year (POTY) Awards, proudly organized by African Leadership Magazine (ALM), stands as the continent's most distinguished stage for honouring excellence - a gathering where Africa's brightest minds, boldest reformers, and most visionary leaders converge to celebrate transformative impact.

Every year, a singular moment brings Africa’s story home — a moment where vision meets legacy, and leadership takes center stage.

For Dr. Girish Nuckchady, Founder of Lifetime Training & Consultancy Services (Mauritius), that moment strikes deeply.

“Celebrating Africa,” he recalls, “has been one of the greatest blessings of my life since 2007. Each time I stand before an audience like this, I feel goosebumps — because this is where we declare that Africa is not a begging bowl, but a continent of abundant richness.”

To him, POTY is more than an event; it is a continent reclaiming its pride.

For Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, Former President of the African Development Bank Group and one of Africa’s most respected global voices, the honour is both humbling and energizing.

“To be awarded African Person of the Year by Africans themselves is deeply inspiring,” he said. “It reminds me to do more — because Africa deserves the best. And every day, we work to fast-track Africa’s development.”

These words capture the heartbeat of the African Persons of the Year (POTY) Awards — a platform where Africa’s greatness is not predicted, but proven.

As the 2026 edition returns to the iconic city of Accra, Ghana — a global symbol of Pan-African pride, democratic stability, and cultural vibrancy — the event steps into a new era under the theme “Leadership for a New Africa: Forging Our Peace, Owning Our Narrative.”

This year’s celebration reflects a continent rising with confidence, reclaiming its voice, and shaping a future anchored in peace, innovation, and inclusive prosperity.

What South Africa Gains From the PetroSA–Shell Offshore Oil Agreement

South Africa’s PetroSA has facilitated a deal giving Shell Offshore a 60% stake in Block 2C off the west coast. This represents a strategic shift in how the country approaches upstream energy, how it seeks investment, and how it plans to revive a struggling national oil company and tap into one of the world’s most exciting offshore basins.

H.E. John Dramani Mahama: A Voice for Stability, Inclusive Growth, and Africa’s Shared Prosperity

At a previous edition of the African Persons of the Year Awards, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana, delivered one of the ceremony’s most memorable reflections—an insight into the economic challenges that shape everyday life across the continent.

Receiving the African Political Leader of the Year Award, he used his platform not for celebration, but for clarity.

He spoke of Ghana’s market women—the backbone of the country’s vibrant commercial ecosystem. Retailers, wholesalers, community financiers, and economic anchors, these women sustain the heartbeat of local trade. Yet, as President Mahama highlighted, their greatest barrier is not ability, ambition, or industry—it is access to financing.

In his address, he connected this simple truth to a broader continental reality: the cost of borrowing in Africa remains one of the private sector’s greatest adversaries.
He explained why governments undertake structural reforms, enter IMF programs, and fight for macroeconomic stability:

“You do structural adjustment because you want inflation to come down, you want interest rates to come down.
There is no greater enemy of the private sector in Africa than inflation and high interest rates.”

As the African Persons of the Year Awards returns in 2026—this time in Accra, Ghana—President Mahama’s reflections carry renewed relevance.

Under the theme “Leadership for a New Africa: Forging Our Peace, Owning Our Narrative,” POTY 2026 calls leaders to confront precisely the issues he articulated:
✔ Strengthening institutions
✔ Ensuring macroeconomic stability
✔ Protecting the private sector
✔ Empowering women, youth, and grassroots entrepreneurs
✔ Reclaiming Africa’s economic narrative through reform and resilience

His message echoes the essence of POTY—an event now regarded as the African Oscars of Leadership, where visionaries shaping Africa’s governance, economy, and society are celebrated on a global stage.

Held in Accra, a city symbolic of Pan-African pride and democratic leadership, the 2026 edition pays tribute to leaders like President Mahama whose voices and actions continue to influence Africa’s development journey.

Just as POTY honours champions of integrity, innovation, and reform, his words remind us that leadership is not ceremony—it is responsibility.

Join us as we celebrate the leaders forging a new Africa, owning our narrative, and shaping our future.
