🧬 What happens when science pushes the human mind and body beyond their limits?
This week we journey from swirling cosmic primordial soups to mind-controlling parasites:
- Altered States (1980) – Ken Russell’s psychedelic dive into consciousness, where science experiments slip into full-blown body horror.
- Upstream Colour (2013) – Shane Carruth’s haunting, arthouse exploration of trauma, love, and memory.

🎙️ A double bill of mad science at its strangest and most beautiful in this week's epsiode of the podcast.

This Thursday we’re back with a brand-new Mad Science episode - diving into two of the most mind-bending sci-fi films we've come across so far:

🧠 Altered States (1980) - A clash of creative titans. Writer Paddy Chayefsky was so unhappy with Ken Russell’s direction that he disowned the film, crediting himself under a pseudonym.
🐛 Upstream Color (2013) - Shane Carruth took a one-man-band approach to filmmaking, handling almost every aspect of production himself. The result is a surreal meditation on memory, identity, and connection

Two films born from intense creative visions - each exploring science, identity, and transformation in radically different ways.

From surreal landscapes to subconscious journeys, these films blur the line between dreams and reality.

- Paprika (2006) – the anime that inspired Inception.
- Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) – heartbreak through dream erasure.
- Brazil (1985) – a bureaucratic dystopia like no other.
- Solaris (1972) – Tarkovsky’s meditative dream planet.
- Videodrome (1983) – body horror meets surreal TV nightmares.

We’ve covered all of these on the podcast (except Videodrome 👀) —-so you can dive back into our archive anytime.

And speaking of dreamlike sci-fi… later this week on Patreon we’re diving into the trippy indie gem Strawberry Mansion.

⚖️ How far would you go to stop evil before it begins?
That moral dilemma drives The Boys from Brazil (1978), where Gregory Peck chillingly portrays Josef Mengele. We also discuss Das Experiment (2001) - a powerful, unsettling film inspired by the Stanford Prison Experiment, exploring how quickly ordinary people can be broken and corrupted by power.

🎙️ Join us as we unpack the darker side of mad science on screen this week on the podcast.

We’re back this week with a brand-new Mad Science episode - but before it drops, here are a couple of behind-the-scenes facts from the films we’ll be covering:

🧬 The Boys from Brazil (1978) - Gregory Peck, best known for heroic roles like Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird, shocked audiences by playing N**i doctor Josef Mengele - one of his only villain roles. This controversial thriller blends history and science fiction in ways that unsettled audiences worldwide.

🔒 Das Experiment (2001) - Loosely inspired by the infamous Stanford Prison Experiment of 1971, this German psychological thriller shows how quickly authority and control can spiral into chaos. It was later remade in Hollywood as The Experiment (2010) starring Adrien Brody and Forest Whitaker.

🎧 We’ll be covering both in this week’s episode of Journey Through Sci-Fi.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK 🛸
What’s the first sci-fi film that blew your mind? The one that made you sit through the credits (mouth wide!) thinking, “What did I just watch?”

Drop in the comments:
- Title & year
- How old you were
- ONE scene that lives rent-free (bullet time? the monolith? chestburster?!)

We’ll read some of our favourites in an upcoming Journey Through Sci-Fi mailbag 🎙️
