Ethiopia Targets Kenya and South Africa in First AfCFTA Exports

Ethiopia will start trading under the African Continental Free Trade Area.

Ethiopia will start trading under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) on Thursday, ending a seven-year preparatory period since signing the agreement in Kigali in 2018.

At a press briefing in Addis Ababa, Yasmin Wohabrebbi, state minister for Trade and Regional Integration, said the country’s first shipments will go to Kenya, citing logistical advantages, with South Africa and Somalia expected to follow shortly.

Over 40 exporters have registered under the AfCFTA framework, though only a subset will participate in the initial phase. “The rest are finalising arrangements with their buyers,” Yasmin told Birrmetrics.

Exports will cover agricultural goods, including meat, coffee, fruits and vegetables, beans, edible oil, and selected manufactured products such as textiles.

Uganda’s Presidential Hopeful Mubarak Munyagwa faces wide criticism on his Swahili Ban Proposal

Uganda’s 2026 presidential race has attracted wide media attention as candidate Mubarak Munyagwa, leader of the Common Man’s Party, announced his intention to ban the use of Swahili in education and public systems if elected. The proposal, delivered in a widely circulated video and reiterated in campaign speeches, has attracted criticism across East Africa.

This comes at a time when young Africans are promoting the adoption of native African language in the education system. In Uganda, Swahili was added as a second official language to strengthen ties within the East African Community. In recent years, Uganda even made Swahili compulsory in schools—a move Munyagwa now seeks to reverse.

Munyagwa stated, “We shall ban Swahili as our national language… we need French instead.” He argues that Swahili, though officially recognized in Uganda since 2005 to promote East African integration, is not widely spoken across the country and limits Ugandans’ access to broader international opportunities

Many young African believe that the use of a common African language will ease the path to African unity. The idea of a shared African language is not new as Pan-Africanists like Kwame Nkrumah and Julius Nyerere envisioned linguistic unity as a cornerstone of continental solidarity.

Mubarak is not the only presidential candidate who speaks on this topic. In The Gambia, Essa Mbye Faal, a prominent Gambian politician recently criticized the government of Adama Barrow for sending individuals to the UNGA who are not fluent in English. His remark was met with criticism as some argued that many attendees of the UNGA are not fluent in English or French but speak their various native languages.

Three Africans from Ghana and Zimbabwe have refused to leave a town in scotland which they say it belongs to their ancestors.

They have named it the Kingdom of Kubala.

They have refused to leave after the Scottish police told me to leave.

They declared it their ancestral home.

The self-styled tribe is made up of a Ghanaian singer, his Zimbabwean wife, and an African-American woman.

They insist the land was taken from their African ancestors more than 400 years ago, so they’ve simply taken it back.
