To give someone a rose is to rely on a 3,000-year tradition to say what you won’t.

In antiquity, it belonged to gods and heros. Christianity repurposed it for purity and martyrdom. Dutch renaissance painters set petals beside skulls to meditate on death; England fought a civil war and named it after roses. By the Victorian era, it had become an emotional minefield: red for love, yellow for jealousy, white for innocence. Modern artists tried to strip it of meaning, abstracting it and ironizing it.

Roses as a symbol are overused, overdetermined, and yet stubbornly effective. 🥀

Ripples disturb the wine’s surface, as though the glass has just been set down, while infrared reflectography revealed a tiny self-portrait hidden in the carafe - a young Caravaggio with dark curly hair, holding a paintbrush at his easel, quietly inserting himself into the scene.
