Evening! If you’ve been keeping up with my stories this week you’ll know I’ve just returned from a mini-break with my daughter to the Yorkshire Dales.

The .co cabin we stayed in was nestled in a pine forest, overlooking the breathtaking Wensleydale Valley and it was the ultimate off-grid luxury experience!

We indulged in (very) slow mornings, enjoyed vast blue (and grey) skies, scenic (hilly) walks, and refreshing swims (and paddles) in the river, plus plenty of time indoors admiring the stunning view from the ridiculously comfy bed!

Swipe through the photos to catch some of our adventures, and don’t forget to save this post if you’re dreaming of a wilderness escape with someone special.

Or better yet, send it to them and get them to book a trip for both of you - BTW you can get £50 off a stay by entering the code WILDCARD at checkout and mentioning my name (Samantha Hansard) in the booking notes.

P.S. This is not an ā€œadā€, I bought and paid for this trip for the two of us but wanted to share the details with you so you can enjoy some downtime too if you need it.

In Norway ā€œup and not crying ā€œis a standard response to ā€œhow are you?ā€ - And I think that’s a very reasonable standard to hold oneself to these days šŸ’š

I saw this quote and thought yes, yes that will do me ….ā€up and not cryingā€. That’s as much as I can expect right now.

I’m very much enjoying my hydrangeas in the front garden. They make me smile every time I make it home from the hospital šŸ’š

Just wanted to update you on what’s going on….If you’ve seen my stories you’ll know we’ve had a bit of a family crisis and my Mum has been in hospital since Friday.

What that means is that I’m not spending much time at home; I slept at the hospital last night and I’m posting from here this morning. It’s tiring and emotionally challenging.

We are keeping everything crossed for my Mum and we are doing all we can to look after; one of us girls or my stepdad is with her 24/7.

These amazing sunflowers were bought for me by my family; they have been incredible. Cooking, shopping, driving me and my step-dad back and forward, visiting and generally being super supportive and loving. They cannot do enough to help.

Family is so important to me but at times like this it’s all that really matters.

I’ve been on the move quite a bit lately — and I’m off to France again this Sunday; I’m a girls trip with a dear friend, my goddaughter and my youngest. It’s going to be fun!

But before the suitcase’s back in action, I thought I’d take a little pause: 10 corners of the house — indoors and out - that quietly wait while I’m on the go.

It’s been hot here in the UK, and I’ve been bouncing between shady garden spots and cooler corners inside like a slightly flustered, heat-dodging lizard. Slide 5 is where I’ve been hanging out most lately but honestly I’m not doing a great job of staying cool and I really really want to install an ice bath/dip tank somewhere in the garden!

Are you escaping anywhere soon, or are you planning to ride out this heatwave in style?

So today I should have been heading for Heathrow to catch a flight to see one of my dearest friends who has moved to Washington. The plan was to hang out with her, and my god daughter, and also take a trip up to New York.

But instead I’m in bed for the third day in a row with a vestibular migraine (think headache, plus sickness, plus vertigo).

It’s been quite a while since I’ve had one (a couple of years I think) but bad enough that I can’t walk in a straight line which means that navigating my way through the admin of a transatlantic flight just feels impossible.

It’s difficult to put my finger on what triggered it but there’s no ignoring the fact that my body has just sent me a very clear message to look after myself a bit better.

So there will be no frantic DIY, up cycling or Christmas content from me over the next few weeks. Just pretty pictures (and video) of corners my home, maybe some trips out into nature, and possibly an assortment of (mainly comfy) clothes. Oh and flowers. Because they make me smile.

You are the best so I know you’ll understand

Home lately….its a bit quieter around here these days, without my girls (the eldest is in Brighton doing a PGCE and the youngest at Uni in Cardiff), but I’m slowly adjusting to life without a full house and enjoying the fact that there’s a bit less washing and tidying up to do!

I’m actually off to see the youngest in Cardiff this coming weekend and the oldest is home next week for half term. Plus we speak a lot on the phone so whilst I miss their physical presence I do get to hear all their news and their voices regularly which I’m taking as a huge win.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that I am slowly adjusting. The big life purpose questions are still hovering in the background but the sense of loss that I was feeling is easing.

If you’re facing a similar transition (and I know lots of you are) I hope you are doing ok too?

Ad.Ā So I thought it might be fun to put together my very own ā€œdopamine menuā€ which basically consists of things both big and small that bring me joy!

I’ve focussed on the things in my home for this one, but to be honest there are quite a few other things to add so I might make another one, because you’ve got to love a happy list! Scroll through to see part 1 of my ā€œdopamine menuā€Ā

Ā 1. My dopamine menuĀ
Ā 2. Soft lighting. The ā€œsmall lightā€ is a must for me (no harsh overhead lights are allowed!) and this one from new collaboration with Morris & Co. is perfect for my kitchen worktop.Ā
Ā 3. A bookcase full of books, most of which I’ve already read!
Ā 4. A big mug of tea and fresh pastries. Served on ripple stoneware plate and scalloped edge woven trayĀ
Ā 5. A roaring fire - watching the flames is so relaxingĀ
Ā 6. Coziness - I’m a big fan of cushions and throws. This Rosehip Crewel Cushion in Green is also from new collaboration with Morris & Co.
7. Vintage finds and lots of plants. You can never have too many of either!Ā
Ā 8. Scented candles. I’m a huge fan and I light one pretty much every night. This one is William Morris Habitat x Morris & Co. Oak & Fallen Acorn Large Glass CandleĀ
9. Fresh Flowers in a gorgeous vase, in this case the wide base clear glass vase.Ā

I posted a story this week of a rather over wrought child that read ā€œtoo tired to work, too poor to quit and too young to retireā€ and that kind of sums it up for me right now!

With my youngest off to Uni this week the big questions about ā€œlife purposeā€ are front and centre and I’m not going to lie I’m seriously wrestling with them.

Should I retrain? Should I move to the country? Should I go back to school? Should I work in a shop? Should I buy a lottery ticket and hope for the best? Should I go back to bed and just pull the duvet over my head?

If you’ve got any advice for me I’d love to hear it. I know this feeling will pass eventually but if you’re facing the same dilemma, or you’ve been through it, or you’re just generally feeling a bit uncertain about the future let’s chat.

Oh and if you’re dropping a child at Uni this week good luck!

My week in stills….

I’m on the countdown to my Camino Way Walk and so I’ve really been trying to up my walking distance game. I may have slightly overdone it on Monday with the 24km trek around Mersea Island but at least I know I can do it!

The rest of the week has been spent recovering, working (on client interiors projects) and creating some exciting content for . Plus I got to visit utterly gorgeous (if you missed my visit just check out my reel) for a couple of blissful nights (pr stay).

Today I’m off to hang out with Tamara selling our old stock which I’m sure is going to be fun and just like the good old days. If you’re in North London you should come and grab yourself a bargain!

So basically it’s been a pretty eclectic and busy week but whilst I’m tired I’m also happy 😊

Images:
1. The kitchen in the spring sunshine
2. Walking (a long way!) in Mersea
3. Ditto but this time featuring Mr VC
4. The incredible master bedroom in lodge 1
5. The veranda
6. Luther basking in the sunshine
7. Working
8. prettiness
9. Wondering whether Mr VC might consider us buying a swift voyager camper van to travel the world in?
10. Loading the car with to sell our wares in Stoke Newington.

Do you have a favourite? 😊
