An invaluable partner in East 🇯🇵

As FIPP celebrates its 100-year anniversary, it’s the perfect time to look back at the partnerships throughout the years that helped us get to this point.

Some of the most invaluable collaborations have been with National Associations (NAS) around the world, from Sweden and Spain to India, Brazil and Japan.

In the first of a series of interviews honouring the history and journey of FIPP and its members, we catch up with Akiko Nakakoshi of the Japanese Magazine Publishers Association (JMPA) to talk about how FIPP and the have impacted the JMPA over the years, and how the Japanese media landscape has evolved.

“The Tokyo Congress held in 1997 marked the first-ever FIPP World Media Congress to take place in Asia. With a unified “All-Japan” spirit, not only the member publishers of the JMPA, but also numerous affiliated organisations and partners devoted a full year to the preparation of the event. It was a great honour for us to welcome more than 700 leading figures from the global publishing industry to Japan, and the experience provided us with many valuable insights. The final day’s gala party commenced with a ceremonial toast led by Yokozuna sumo wrestlers, creating a memorable and festive atmosphere in which participants were able to reflect on the three days of discussions and exchange. Since then, the FIPP World Media Congress has remained a matter of significant interest for all members.”

“There is only one single person that puts money into the media, creative and marketing ecosystem and that is actual members of the public. The rest of us are shuffling their money. So, my message (to publishers) is: Bring them joy. Lift their day. Help them and remember that no one can do that the way you can.”

Douglas McCabe, CEO and Director of Publishing Tech at subscription research service Enders Analysis, during Festival in London.

David Buttle, Founder of DJB Strategies, on how Google’s AI model is “bleeding news media dry”:

Google is leveraging existing relationships with publishers from the search era, where the value exchange was clear: publishers provided content, and in return, Google drove traffic. But in the AI era, users get answers without clicking through, so publishers lose traffic and revenue while Google benefits.
Google is using its position in search to gain an unfair advantage in AI, essentially de-monetising publisher content. This shift has changed its relationship with the news industry from “benevolent dictator” to near-outright hostility. Google’s recent research attempted to show how little value news brings to its platform, which reflects a significant shift in attitude.

In the short to medium term, how serious will this impact be?

It’s already serious.

“Finding a good license partner is a bit like falling in love,” says Marie-Eva Chopin (), Director of Business Development: Luxury and Art de Vivre at , France’s largest digital and print magazine publisher. “It’s a relationship between us and our partners and they have to fall in love with our brands and trust us.

“It’s a case of finding the right person, in the right place and at the right moment. They have to believe in the projects we do and love our print issues. And we have a lot to offer another publisher because our portfolio of magazines is vast.”
