Scientists in China have created a groundbreaking fabric that cools your body under direct sunlight — without using electricity. Developed by teams at Zhejiang University and Huazhong University of Science and Technology, this "metafabric" uses a clever mix of polylactic acid, synthetic fibers, and titanium dioxide nanoparticles to reflect harmful UV, visible, and near-infrared light — the main causes of solar heat.

What’s truly impressive? This fabric doesn’t just reflect sunlight — it also releases body heat as mid-infrared radiation, which escapes straight into space instead of warming the air around you. Thanks to this dual action, the fabric can cool the skin by nearly 5°C (9°F) compared to regular cotton, even in strong sunlight.

In 2015, Filipino engineer and social innovator Aisa Mijeno created the SALt lamp — a smart and sustainable lighting solution that runs on saltwater. The name SALt stands for Sustainable Alternative Lighting, and it needs no batteries, no kerosene, and no power outlet. Just a glass of water mixed with two tablespoons of salt can power the lamp for up to 8 hours!

Plants may not have ears like us, but studies show they can “hear” danger in their own special way! A fascinating study by the University of Missouri, shared by Science Alert, found that a small mustard plant called Arabidopsis thaliana can detect the sound of a caterpillar munching on its leaves — and fight back!

Researchers recorded the vibrations of caterpillars chewing and played them to other plants. Surprisingly, those plants started releasing mustard oils — bitter compounds that bugs hate! Even more amazing, the plants only reacted to chewing sounds. Vibrations from the wind or harmless insects didn’t trigger the same defense.

This means plants can tell the difference between sounds that signal danger and those that don’t. They do this through special proteins called mechanoreceptors, which sense touch or pressure. It’s one of the first studies showing plants can respond to meaningful sounds, revealing how incredibly aware and responsive they really are!
