“Polyvalent, yet flat; the projects navigate a tender seam between something and hard nothing. Really, is this about percentages? Someone said the best work here is not locatable as either art or non-art. True. Mired in an uncanny valley, a mushy middle, the selection of materials provokes an uncomfortable feeling of incompleteness, lack. You work through little psychological, interpretive hiccups, not huge societal issues. It seems you need a whole field of these kinds of minor art inflections to get the right effects, but the reception will not be uniform.”

“The artist works in the wider field of painting—often figurative and conceptual. Her appropriation practice aims to establish dialogue between seemingly antagonistic techniques and forms of knowledge, and to highlight the distinctiveness of these forms—be they from the realms of technique (traditional and contemporary), design, sculpture, underground cultures, or mass media.
As is often the case in Lucy McKenzie’s work, private experience confronts public space. She produces two train carriages in which visitors can sit down, converse, kiss, and endlessly observe the painted landscape mounted on a mechanical drum.”

“In an idiosyncratic melding of staging and tracing interactions between personal anecdotes and civic space, Marina Xenofontos underscores the vernacular processes that inflect both architectural and power structures. Encompassing found objects, kinetic sculptures, light installations, digital and analog avatars, writing, and film, her practice explores methods for recovering the fantastical, imaginary aspects of culture obscured by historiography. Her interest in failure and a predilection to contest fixity also position her artistic projects themselves as iterative and in flux.”

“At shows, I was usually the youngest person in the scene, but looking back at it now, everyone there was so young at the same time too. I think of adolescent subculture as a rebellion with style and conviction. It’s both loving and subversive. It has to be balanced. I like the hidden mannerisms, unspoken language, and humor of it.”

Manfred Pernice ( ) in conversation with Stephan Schmidt-Wulffen (Stephan Schmidt-Wulffen) for our newest ISSUE 15.

"It was important, especially in the early period, that the sculptural body should carry additional information. This was also above all a liberation from the idea that sculpture must express everything 'by it-self'."

Manfred Pernice lives and works in Berlin. He studied graphic-painting at Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Braunschweig and sculpture at Hochschule der Künste in Berlin. Since 2012, he has led the class "Objekt-Bild-Hauerei" at the UdK Berlin. Pernice's work has been shown at the Venice Biennial, documenta 11 and Skulptur Projekte Münster 07, among others, as well as through solo exhibitions in international galleries and instiutions such as Fondazione Morra Greco, Naples; Kunstmuseum St. Gallen; Institut D'Art Contemporain, Villeurbanne; Museum Ludwig, Cologne; and the Secession, Vienna.

"In Sinthome, Laurie Smith’s solo show at Wschód in Warsaw, the artist introduces a repertoire of close encounters that cut through the gloom of the night. Tenants, visitors, regulars, and voyeurs meet in the close installation as if they are ready to move as soon as they are unobserved, when we turn our backs to them. For an artist who has built his practice around the textures of q***r nightlife, Smith has—with this new body of work—turned his attention to the night of the after-hours, the fluorescent hum of a bar at closing time, the awkward pause before someone decides whether to stay or to leave."

“To present any piece of writing on the occasion of Justin Nalley's Confession is to risk the delicate balance of clarity and obfuscation at play here. Over the past months, we've discussed various entry points into this work-the lyric I and the universal self, mark making as a means of recording labor and life, ritual and dependency, cardioid geometry. I've seen the process, and it's something like prayer but not, devotion curling in on itself. It felt private, so I left him there.
