London-based composer Laila Arafah's beguiling music invites a unique and intensive kind of listening: foregrounding sonic objects that are hazy, unstable, disorienting, vulnerable, and liminal. Her works have been commissioned by ensembles such as Explore Ensemble and LCMF, Aldeburgh Festival, and recently the London Symphony Orchestra and BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. Laila was a composer-in-residence for CoMA London, and a composer fellow at Aspen Music Festival; she currently studies at the Royal Academy of Music, with Rubens Askenar and Gareth Moorcraft.

Last year, we spoke with Laila about her use of timbre, counterpoint, and shifting listening experiences ➡️

"I like the phrase 'nothing new can be made'. It’s not the negative side of it. But everything that we ever thought of, everything we ever did, has already [been] done, and thought of — but I think of it more in a beautiful way. So many generations were doing, thinking, worrying about the same things that we are. It’s a nice connection. This is how humans are all interlinked."

The work of British composer Vivek Haria is intertwined with heritage and personal experiences, drawing from Hindustani classical music, Jain devotional chant, and a deep connection to choral music. Vivek has collaborated with musicians including the BBC Singers, Mahan Esfahani and Fenella Humphreys, and players of the London Symphony Orchestra. Vivek read Music at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, where he studied composition with Raymond Yiu and Richard Causton, and he continues to be mentored by Brian Elias. Beyond composition, Vivek is a chartered accountant, as well as a member of the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s inaugural NewGen board.

On Thursday 4 June, Vivek's latest work, SANGAM: Songs of the River - commissioned by the Royal Philharmonic Society - will premiere at Swaledale Festival. Revisit Vivek's interview with us ahead of the premiere, discussing active listening, breath, Jain spiritual traditions, and more ➡️

Award-winning composer and bandleader Olivia Murphy’s debut orchestral album is, in her words, “all about transformation”. Since 2022, Olivia has run the Olivia Murphy Jazz Orchestra (OMJO): formed of performers and improvisers from the London and Birmingham Jazz scenes, OMJO have quickly established themselves as one of the UK’s leading jazz orchestras, performing sold-out shows across the country, and releasing their debut album, Fateful Birds & Fledging Stories, on 8 May 2026.

For PRXLUDES, Olivia takes us through the concepts and processes that informed her debut album, exploring group improvisation, Greek myth, and interweaving threads of transformation ➡️

26/05/2026

The music of Ukrainian composer and performer Sonia Lozina blends folklore, cultural heritage, myths, memory, and rebellion, all informed by her myriad experience in theatre and pop performance. Sonia studies composition at the University of Music and Performing Arts (mdw) in Vienna, and studied her Bachelor’s degree in music theory in Kyiv. In 2024, she was awarded a grant from the European Artists Solidarity Programme (ASoP), funded by the Austrian Federal Ministry, creating her music-theatrical performance ‘Blüte des Farnes’; in 2026, her work was presented in Hanoi, Vietnam, as part of a cultural project supported by the Austrian Embassy.

For PRXLUDES, Sonia chatted about how Ukrainian folklore, dramaturgy, and the multifaceted practices of her peers have informed her compositions ➡️
