Britain’s Wildlife Gets a Historic Boost: £60 Million Plan to Save Hundreds of Threatened Species

A major new investment could give some of Britain’s most vulnerable wildlife a second chance. 🌿🦉
More than 350 threatened species across England are set to benefit from the country’s largest-ever wildlife recovery investment, with £60 million supporting 130 conservation projects.
From rare butterflies and native crayfish to birds, mammals, plants and marine species, conservation teams will work to restore habitats and help struggling populations recover.
Some of the species receiving support include the swallowtail butterfly, one of England’s most endangered butterflies, and the white-clawed crayfish, Britain’s only native crayfish species.
After years of wildlife decline, conservation experts say protecting nature is not only about saving animals — it is about protecting the landscapes, ecosystems and natural beauty that future generations will inherit.

🐧 Puffins Make an Incredible Comeback on Lundy Island! ❤️🌿

More than 40,000 seabirds are now thriving on Lundy Island in the Bristol Channel—the highest number recorded since the 1930s. It's being celebrated as one of the UK's greatest wildlife conservation success stories.

Just over two decades ago, invasive rats had devastated the island's bird populations, leaving puffins on the brink of local extinction. Following a major conservation effort that removed the invasive predators, wildlife has made an extraordinary recovery.

Today, puffin numbers have risen from just 13 birds in 2000 to more than 1,300, while the island is once again home to thriving colonies of Manx shearwaters, razorbills and guillemots. Conservationists say it shows what can happen when nature is given the chance to recover.

🚨 Hundreds of protected birds of prey have been illegally killed across the UK—and conservationists say it's only the tip of the iceberg. 🦅💔

A new report from the RSPB reveals 921 confirmed cases of birds of prey being shot, trapped, or poisoned between 2015 and 2024, involving 18 protected species. According to the report, 805 birds were killed, with buzzards, red kites, and peregrine falcons among the most frequently targeted.

The RSPB says 55% of confirmed incidents were linked to land managed for gamebird shooting, and argues current wildlife laws are failing to protect these iconic species. The charity is calling for a UK-wide licensing system for gamebird shooting, similar to measures already introduced for grouse shooting in Scotland. The shooting industry disputes the need for licensing, saying the crimes are committed by a small minority and should be addressed through stronger enforcement.

🐻 Bears come in a wide range of sizes, and their standing height reveals just how different these powerful animals can be.

The giant panda and Andean bear are among the smaller bear species, while the American black bear can stand noticeably taller when fully upright. Moving up in size, the brown bear is one of the most massive land predators, known for its incredible strength and imposing presence.

At the top stands the polar bear, the largest bear species and the biggest land carnivore on Earth. When standing on its hind legs, a large polar bear can reach heights of over 9 feet (2.8 meters).

Although bears usually walk on all fours, they often stand upright to investigate their surroundings, catch scents carried by the wind, or assess potential threats. This behavior provides a fascinating look at the remarkable size differences found across the bear family.
