As The HAC Band continue their tour in Belgium, yesterday saw them march through the streets of Poperinge to the market square, drawing a crowd for their performance, attended by the Mayor of Poperinge.
Poperinge is home to Talbot House, a place that has held deep significance since the Great War, and the setting for the afternoon concert. Once a sanctuary for soldiers during the First World War, Talbot House offered peace, comfort, and camaraderie amidst the chaos. Known as an Every Man’s Club, it welcomed all ranks - a true home from home, where stories were shared and burdens eased.
More than just a building, it remains a powerful symbol of unity, resilience, and community, then and now.
The HAC Band are recorded to have performed at Talbot House in March 1918, making today’s concert in the garden all the more poignant. The band also took the opportunity to reenact a photograph taken in the gardens during the Great War.
