Congratulations to Musn McAuliffe who participated in The HAC Regiment - Honourable Artillery Company Pass Out Parade this week, marking the end of his basic training.

The HAC Band, who were providing musical support to the parade, watched on as Musn McAuliffe, saxophonist in the band, was awarded the 'Bright Spark Trophy', which is presented to the soldier who performed the best in the academic assessments and showed the best technical prowess throughout the course. An excellent achievement!

On Sunday, The HAC Trombone Quartet provided musical support to the Sunday Service - St Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist at The Royal Military Chapel - The Guards' Chapel. Alongside hymns, the congregation was welcomed with music including:

• Kathy – Brian Lynn (1954– )
• Achieved is the Glorious Work – Franz Joseph Haydn (1732–1809), arr. Don Miller
• O Magnum Mysterium – Cristóbal de Morales (1500–1553), arr. Luther Didrickson

It was also perhaps the first time a trombone quartet has been heard in the Chapel on a Sunday, and certainly the first provided by The HAC Band.

To conclude their tour of Belgium, The HAC Band were honoured to provide musical support for the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate yesterday evening.

Complimenting The HAC Band's presence at The Menin Gate, LCpl Faithful lay a wreath for HAC Regiment - Honourable Artillery Company soldiers who fell in the Great War as part of the ceremony.

WO1 Buckell and SSgt Powers, representing 162 Regiment RLC also laid a wreath and delivered a reading. Both have supported the band throughout the tour as drivers and took this opportunity to honour their own regiment.

The band are proud to have supported the diurnal ceremony where every evening at exactly 20:00 the police halt the traffic passing under the Menin Gate to allow the official buglers, wearing the uniform of the local volunteer fire brigade to play their moving tribute to the memory of the soldiers who fought and died so many years ago.

Saturday was yet another busy day for The HAC Band as they performed in concert to an appreciative audience at St George’s Memorial Church in the centre of Ypres. A poignant setting, St George’s Memorial Church, Ypres (Ieper), was built to commemorate over 500,000 British and Commonwealth soldiers who died in the three battles fought for the Ypres Salient during World War I.

The programme featured military marches, popular favourites, and a standout performance of Artie Shaw’s Clarinet Concerto by CSgt Greg Laing. The lively ‘Trumpets Wild’ trio added fantastic energy, and Nigel Hess’s ‘Dance of the Eagle’ from the Lochnegar Suite brought the concert to a soaring close.

As The HAC Band continue their tour in Belgium, yesterday saw them march through the streets of Poperinge to the market square, drawing a crowd for their performance, attended by the Mayor of Poperinge.

Poperinge is home to Talbot House, a place that has held deep significance since the Great War, and the setting for the afternoon concert. Once a sanctuary for soldiers during the First World War, Talbot House offered peace, comfort, and camaraderie amidst the chaos. Known as an Every Man’s Club, it welcomed all ranks - a true home from home, where stories were shared and burdens eased.

More than just a building, it remains a powerful symbol of unity, resilience, and community, then and now.

The HAC Band are recorded to have performed at Talbot House in March 1918, making today’s concert in the garden all the more poignant. The band also took the opportunity to reenact a photograph taken in the gardens during the Great War.

Today, The Band of the Honourable Artillery Company were proud to provide music for the ‘Lt Gilbert Talbot Remembrance Concert’ held at Sanctuary Wood Cemetery in Ypres, Belgium.

The service marked 110 years since Lt Talbot led the remnants of his platoon at Hooge, where he was later buried by his brother, Revd. Neville Talbot. In the presence of the Talbot family and guests, the band gathered at his final resting place to commemorate his service and sacrifice.

Talbotousian Marijke Vandevyvere shared Lt Talbot’s story, recounting his life, values, and the enduring legacy that led to the founding of Talbot House - Every man's club in his memory.

Accompanied by poignant music and the Last Post, the performance of Talbot House’s dedicated Toc H march added a meaningful and distinctive touch to the occasion.

Thank you to all who attended the concert held at The Royal Military Chapel - The Guards' Chapel earlier this month. The evening featured a varied and engaging programme of music, with a particularly memorable performance of the Artie Shaw Clarinet Concerto by The HAC Band principal clarinet, CSgt Greg Laing.

The concert was held in support of SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity raising funds and awareness for important work they do. We hope those who joined us had an enjoyable evening of music!
