This weekend marked five years since the Taliban seized back control of Afghanistan.

In those five years, the rights and freedoms of Afghan women and girls have been systematically stripped away. Afghanistan is now the only country in the world where girls are banned from secondary and higher education, while women face severe restrictions on their ability to work and participate in public life.

At Truth Tellers 2025, former Afghanistan International presenter Shabnam Khan Dawran spoke about the moment the Taliban took control, and what it meant for her as a female journalist. Shabnam is now working with the BBC Afghan service.

“One photo broke my heart. A Talib fighter sitting on the same chair where I had presented the news the night before. That image just crushed me.”
