Sly Dunbar (May 10, 1952 – January 26, 2025) was one of reggae’s most influential drummers. Alongside bassist Robbie Shakespeare, he emerged from the Channel One studio scene in the mid-1970s and revolutionized reggae drumming. His work spans countless classics across reggae, dub, and dancehall, plus pop collaborations with Grace Jones, Bob Dylan, and No Doubt.
“Double Drum Dub” is an instrumental dub track by Sly and the Revolutionaries, the house band at Joseph Hoo Kim’s Channel One studio in Kingston, Jamaica. Released in 1977 on the roots international label.
The “double drum” refers to Sly overdubbing multiple percussion tracks or playing alongside another drummer. The Revolutionaries were Channel One’s house band, and this track showcases their signature “rockers” sound—a heavier, driving rhythm style that defined late 1970s Jamaican music.
