Designed by Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen & carved by Lukas Ahorn in 1820–21,
the monument shows a wounded lion with a dagger in its back, lying on a French shield.
It is a deeply moving and famous memorial, with Mark Twain calling it "the most mournful & moving piece of stone in the world🌍
