The Ministry of Health has launched a review into maternal deaths and referral system challenges at Bo Regional Government Hospital as part of the Government’s 300 Days of Action initiative to reduce preventable maternal and child deaths.

Led by Chief Medical Officer Dr. Sartie M. Kenneh, the review brings together senior ministry officials, technical advisers, hospital management, and the Bo District Health Management Team to assess maternal and newborn health outcomes and identify gaps in care.

Preliminary findings indicate that many of the reported maternal deaths occurred within health facilities and were preventable. Key concerns include weaknesses in clinical documentation, emergency obstetric care, referral coordination, and maternal death surveillance processes.

Health officials have called for stronger clinical management, timely referrals, improved supervision, and better use of health data to improve patient outcomes.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening emergency maternal healthcare services and working with partners to reduce preventable maternal and newborn deaths across Sierra Leone.
