Conversion of Adi ibn Hatim
Moved by his sister’s account, Adi ibn Hatim (sa) decided to travel to Medina with a mix of hatred and curiosity, resolving to judge the Holy Prophet (sa) for himself. Adi approached the Prophet (sa) in the mosque, who greeted him warmly and took him to his house. On the way, an elderly woman stopped the Prophet (sa) to speak with him, and he patiently listened. This made Adi think, “By God, this is no king.”
The Holy Prophet (sa) asked Adi if he was a Christian, to which he replied affirmatively. The Prophet (sa) then asked if it was true that Adi collected one-fourth of his people’s earnings, a practice forbidden in his religion. Astonished that the Prophet (sa) knew this private information, Adi realised he was indeed a prophet.
Understanding Adi’s reasons for resisting Islam, the Prophet (sa) addressed them directly and made three prophecies about the future:
Adi feared the small number and poverty of the Muslims, but a time would come when there would be so much wealth that no one would be found to accept charity.
Adi feared the large number of enemies of the Muslims, but a time would come when a woman could travel alone from Qadisiyyah to Mecca without fear.
Adi only saw sovereignty and power in the hands of non-Muslims, but a time would come when the Muslims would conquer the great empires of the world, including the treasures of Chosroes.
