New York has taken the top spot in World Population Review’s 2026 public school ranking, while Arizona sits at the bottom of the 50 state list. The ranking looks at broad measures connected to school performance, resources, funding, and safety, giving families a snapshot of how education systems compare across the country. New York’s position reflects strong overall results across those categories, while Arizona’s placement highlights challenges that continue to affect its public schools. Still, rankings like this should be read with context because different organizations use different methods and can produce very different results. For example, WalletHub’s separate 2026 school system ranking places Massachusetts first and Arizona 46th. Even so, the New York and Arizona comparison is drawing attention because it shows just how much educational outcomes can vary depending on where students live.
