🌖 It’s that fairy light-lit time of year when books really come into their own!
Well-chosen books are always my most appreciated gift & settling down on a dark afternoon with a hot cup of tea & cosy read is SUPER appealing... what ‘to do’ list?

🌚’In Praise of Shadows’ by Jun’ichirō Tanizaki fits the ‘cosy read’ bill perfectly. Published in 1933, this evocative long essay focuses on the vanishing aesthetics of dark, glossy, mysterious Japanese interiors. Just the thing to read by candlelight!

🌒I took this photo in the Barbican; such an atmospheric building which is so full of bright lights and shadowy nooks. I adore spending a few precious hours reading there...

Have you read any books you’d recommend over the holidays so far?!

𝘉𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘤, 𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘢𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘭𝘰𝘵𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘯 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘑𝘢𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘦... BUT we found it was really difficult to match them with a tutor logistically: that is, to get the right tutor to the right place, and the right time, for a short kids’ lesson...

Unfortunately, I often wasn’t able to help. But since the shift to online lessons, all that has changed & we have many young learners of Japanese!

The Good News is: 𝗧𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲, and our professional & dedicated tutors have really risen to the challenge of online teaching.

Likewise, so many students embraced tuition online and enjoyed seeing their learning progress steadily!

KOJI: the JOY of MOULD! 🍄

⭐ Are you trying to include more fermented food in your diet?! I love that many of the basic Japanese ingredients are naturally fermented!

⭐ I really enjoyed chatting with the wonderful, London-based Japanese chef Yuki Gomi all about KOJI.

🎧🎤It was SUCH a joy to speak with writing mentor & bestselling author, Beth Kempton , an award-winning entrepreneur and producer of online courses, a Reiki Master, a yoga teacher, a mama of two young girls, and a self-help author whose books have been translated into more than 25 languages!!!

✨Even if you don’t have a copy of her book ‘Wabi Sabi’, you would likely recognise it from it’s gorgeous pale green cover… I see it in practically every book shop, gift shop & boutique!

💕I loved speaking with Beth about what the pandemic revealed about the true nature of things, her fifth book ‘The Way of the Fearless Writer’, as well as this small but significant details of what tea & toast she likes best when she gets up to write at 5am!

I literally think about this word every day!!!

The word 'Mottainai' makes me think some awesome advice I got last year about my kids' fussy eating. The advice came from the wonderful Anna of

I just mentioned on one of Anna’s posts that I thought it was difficult to introduce new foods to my children because I ended up wasting things and I have this strong feeling… the Japanese word is ‘mottainai’ so, ‘waste not, want not’.

And I was, you know, not wanting to throw things away and it just made me really uptight.

Anna suggested that I should REFRAME that by thinking about WASTING THE OPPORTUNITY to introduce new foods, which I thought was brilliant!

What do you think?
