For this week’s we visit one of America’s recording studio institutions – this is !
Founded in Jackson, Mississippi, 1967 – Malaco has been at the forefront of the industry for more than 50 years, and a hotbed for Blues, Soul and Soul Gospel in particular. Those to have blessed its halls include The Pointer Sisters, Johnnie Taylor, Paul Simon, Frank Williams and Anita Ward, to name just a few. The comfortable and accurate control room houses an API Legacy console, behind which sits an elevated island with a 14ft granite working area. There’s an extensive array of vintage tube and solid-state outboard, alongside some choice modern pieces to meet the needs of top engineers, no matter the genre or workflow. Monitoring includes several near-field options, alongside a pair of soffit-mounted, bi-amped, Bryston-powered mains, with 18-inch floor subs should the project require. The studio also offers Studer analogue tape machines in all configurations.
The 670sq ft live room can accommodate live band performances, with excellent mic separation due to the meticulous attention to detail in wall and ceiling design. Three iso rooms can be used for anything from vocals, acoustic instruments and amps – all of which with sight lines to the control and live rooms. The studio’s vintage mic selection includes a sequential serial-numbered pair of Neumann U-67’s, a valve U-47 and a RCA 77DX, alongside various other dynamic and condenser classics.
The studio’s kitchen area seats 24, with catering, delivery or DIY options all available. Clients can choose from a range of accommodation options: getting a taste of Mississippi history in downtown Jackson or residing in the more modern accommodations in the Northern part of the city. All have plenty of excellent restaurants either in-house or nearby, and lie roughly 15 minutes from the studio.
