40 years ago today, more than 250,000 people gathered on Clapham Common for the Artists Against Apartheid Freedom Festival.

With Nelson Mandela still imprisoned and apartheid firmly entrenched, musicians, activists and ordinary people came together in one of the most significant demonstrations of solidarity ever seen in Britain.
The festival became a defining moment in the global movement to free Mandela and end apartheid.
