🚪🎄 The Winter Sports guide 2025-2026 by National Geographic Traveller (UK) was spun on its head to become a festive advent calendar

A total of 24 winter sports experiences and articles from the guide featured throughout December, published alongside the Jan/Feb issue of National Geographic Traveller (UK). Each received its own door in a tailored advent calendar, posted as stories on National Geographic Traveller (UK)’s Instagram account.

Karlina Valeiko, digital content editor, said: “An entirely novel content format, the advent calendar was a challenging but rewarding project to work on. The result is not only a visually impactful, engaging and dynamic content package that was a creative way to promote the content from our Winter Sports guide but also brought a noticeable boost to our Instagram story engagement, too.”

Whether it’s scenic shots of Vietnam’s rolling landscapes or the dynamic culture of Spain, National Geographic Traveller (UK)’s immersive animated covers have been bringing to life the award-winning cover stories featured within the magazine since the initiative launched in March 2025.

Becky Redman, art director at National Geographic Traveller (UK), said: “We have welcomed the creative challenge of finding the best video that also reflects the inner pages of the cover story. Once it’s done, however, it’s an intense feeling of completion.”

“By animating our covers, we paired the excitement of each new National Geographic Traveller (UK) issue with the power of our striking, high-quality photography on Instagram to capture a new audience,” said Berkok Yüksel, senior content strategist. “The result is a set of Reels that grabs our audience’s attention and feels native to the feed — reinforcing video as a core part of our content toolkit.

Keep a look out for more animated covers in 2026.

📻Kira Richards, APL Media’s assistant project editor, was recently interviewed on BBC Radio London’s evening programme, Sounds of the City.

Kira — who works across APL projects such as the Travel Media Awards Step Up scheme, as well as editorial and branded content for National Geographic Traveller (UK) — was invited to New Broadcasting House on 9 December.

In the interview with host Kim Davis, she talked about her career in travel and food journalism, whether you need a degree to work in the industry and her recent visit to Mexico.

“It was very exciting to be interviewed on live radio for the first time,” says Kira. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to talk to Londoners about pursuing a career in the travel media industry, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds.”

🌍 New issue alert 🌎

Where will the new year take you? Usher in 2026 with the Jan/Feb issue of National Geographic Traveller (UK), which roams little-known corners of Japan in search of subcultures, snowy peaks and time-honed traditions.

The East Asian archipelago has truly captured the imaginations of travellers in recent years. And while that means that some parts of Japan have been busier than usual, much of the country remains unknown to travellers. Comprising four main islands and thousands of smaller ones, this is a nation stretching some 2,000 miles in length. Uncover its most idiosyncratic experiences — from island-hopping in Okinawa to hopping between vinyl listening bars in Tokyo — in the latest issue of National Geographic Traveller (UK).

Don’t miss:

🔹Sweden: Sámi creativity blooms amid the ice and snow of the northern Lapland region
🔹Grand Canyon: A backcountry hike through Arizona along the multi-day Escalante Route
🔹Türkiye: A photographic journey through the lush, tea-wreathed hills around the city of Rize
🔹Poland: ‘Drunk’ cheese and herring vodka — anything goes for the chefs of the Tricity region
