Jeonnam Cultural Foundation Presents: New York, New Ink!

Contemporary Artists Reimagine the Ink Painting Tradition

NEW YORK CITY, NY, UNITED STATES, January 7, 2026

The Jeonnam Cultural Foundation, organizers of the Jeonnam International Sumuk Biennale, present New York, New Ink at the Korean Cultural Center New York from January 10 to January 30, 2026. The exhibition reintroduces the aesthetics of ink art and the philosophical foundations of East Asian thought through a powerful selection of contemporary works that resonate deeply within today’s global art discourse.

It reexamines the spiritual depth of ink wash painting—an artistic tradition historically underrepresented in the Western art historical canon—and reframes its relevance for the present. Participating artists include Han Young Sup, Jeong GwangHee, Kang Un, Kay Yoon, Kim Sang Yeon, Koo Seong Youn, Lee Lee Nam, and Sul Park.

With my new exhibition opening on 9th Jan, we could not join my brother but we spent an amazing time with Dowling followed by my brother Pulkitty. Thank you for moving the destination, and as if by destiny itself, the Year of the Fire Horse came galloping in.

Two exhibitions not to be missed — one in New York, one in Seoul

Together, these shows how women have shifted from being depicted as still subjects to becoming active agents navigating increasingly complex worlds. Seminal works with some bonus footage from Gwangju last year

Women in Ayoung Kim’s Delivery Dancer Trilogy (MoMA PS1)

In Delivery Dancer’s Sphere (2022), live-action scenes of actors move through real city locations whose routes regenerate endlessly, creating an urban labyrinth.
In Arc: 0° Receiver, two women enter a “futurist multiverse” where they must outpace the system’s own delivery time.
In Arc: Inverse (2024), the story shifts to the alternate world of Novaria, where the protagonists transport lost artefacts—and, once again, time itself.

Across all three works, women navigate temporal pressure, unstable infrastructures, and shifting realities.

Lim Jik-soon at Yeh Gallery (Seoul)

Lim Jik-soon, born in 1921, lived through a century marked by colonial rule, war, national division, and Korea’s extraordinary transformation from a devastated land into a technologically advanced nation. As one of Korea’s first modern painters and a dedicated educator, he often painted women because he believed they carried an unseen strength—a quiet, resilient power that persisted despite their seemingly delicate appearance.

뉴욕과 서울에서 놓쳐서는 안 될 두 전시

이 두 전시는 1980년대부터 2020년대까지 여성 초상이 어떻게 변화해왔는지를 보여준다. 정적인 대상으로 그려지던 여성은 이제 복잡하게 변화하는 세계를 스스로 헤쳐 나가는 능동적 주체로 등장한다.

아영 김의 Delivery Dancer Trilogy (MoMA PS1, 뉴욕)

(2022)**에서는 배우들이 실제 도시 공간을 이동하는 장면이 등장하며, 그 동선은 끝없이 재생성되어 도시 자체가 하나의 미로가 된다.
에서는 두 여성 인물이 “미래적 멀티버스”로 들어가, 시스템보다 더 빠르게 시간을 돌파해야 하는 과제에 직면한다.
(2024)에서는 시공간이 뒤집힌 가상 세계 노바리아(Novaria)로 무대가 옮겨가고, 주인공들은 잃어버린 유물들—그리고 다시 한 번, 시간 자체를 운반해야 한다.

세 작품을 관통하는 것은, 여성이 시간의 압박, 불안정한 인프라, 변화하는 현실의 균열 속을 끊임없이 이동하며 대응해 나가는 모습이다.

임직순 전시 (예화랑, 서울)

1921년에 태어난 임직순은 식민지 시기, 전쟁, 분단, 그리고 전후 초고속 산업화를 거쳐 한국이 폐허에서 첨단국가로 변모하는 전 세기적 격변을 몸소 경험했다. 한국 최초의 근대 화가이자 교육자였던 그는 여성들을 자주 그렸다. 왜냐하면 그는 여성에게 겉모습과 달리 보이지 않는 힘, 은근하지만 오래 지속되는 내면의 강인함이 있다고 믿었기 때문이다.
