FHR release the finest quality classical, world and jazz recordings performed by some of the greatest artists of the past, present and future. FHR has established itself as a significant independent record label. Indeed, their releases have been recognised by the press as “fascinating” and “remarkable” and are always produced to the highest standard. Their success is a product of high aesthetic va

lue from an experienced, enthusiastic and dedicated FHR team. Alongside exciting new recordings, FHR specialise in issuing important gems of the past on its historical sub-label FHR Remasters. Most of these recordings have never been issued before and include recordings newly discovered by FHR through their research in various tape archives. To date, FHR have licensed recordings from the EMI, HMV, Pye/Nixa, Universal/Westminster, Capitol Records catalogues, broadcast recordings from BBC Radio, NCRV in Holland and Bavarian Radio, and Archive of Recorded Sound (ARS). Wherever possible, FHR work from the original masters thus producing the best possible sound. Indeed, it has been written that “Few remastering teams have attended to vintage tapes with more loving attention than First Hand Records…” (Gramophone Magazine). A number of FHR titles have been selected as Diapson D’OR, frequently as a Gramophone Editor’s Choice/Reissue of the Month, Musicweb-International CD of the Month and a number of 5-star reviews in BBC Music Magazine. Their Shura Cherkassky release “The complete HMV stereo recordings” was awarded the Best Reissue/Vintage Recording of 2009 by International Piano Magazine. Recently, Alexandra Papastefanou was awarded The Union of Greek Theatre and Music Critics Award: Best Recording of 2018 for her FHR recording of The Well-Tempered Clavier

The first single released last week from pianist/composer Michael Stephen Brown's FHR album 'TWELVE BLOCKS' featuring all his own compositions with special guest musicians. In this single called 'Katrina' (from 'Four Lakes for Children') Brown is also featured as pianist.

'The four pieces were designed for children to play, each with a technical challenge to solve, a puzzle, a game... The fourth and final piece, Lake Katrina, concludes with a tranquil, hymn-like prayer. Through my work, I sought to give voice to the Trask children and honour Yaddo, a place where magic and creativity thrive.'

Review of the May 2025 FHR release 'BARTÓK: Viola Concerto (revised version) • 44 Duos for Two Violins (arr. for 2 violas or viola and cello)' just published on Classical Explorer

'An important recording of the Bartók Viola Concerto -
Neubauer himself is superb, joined here by the Hong Kong Philharmonic and David Atherton. The Hong Kong orchestra is on fine form; listen to how Neubauer conveys the yearning in the first movement, and how Atherton is with him with razor-sharp precision all the way'

Thank you Rob Cowan for writing a great review in Gramophone magazine (Dec 25) of our recent release of Claudio Arrau playing live at the Ambassador Auditorium, California (5CD set, first release).

'…a mesmerising account of the Liszt’s B minor Sonata, free-spirited, dramatic, lyrical and barnstorming where needs be (the set also includes a stormy reading of Liszt’s Dante Sonata). This is the structure-conscious, big-toned Arrau we read about but don’t always hear on recordings… Experiencing great music as Arrau reimagines it is a rare privilege’

Remastered by John Croft (Chiaro Music Recording and Production)

Born in Chile, Claudio Arrau (1903–1991) was one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century, an artist who was totally serious about his role in life, a man completely dedicated to the music of the great composers who shared his insights and understanding of their work with his public.

A nice review from MusicWeb International of recent release 'GIBBS: Sonatas for Violin and Basso Continuo, Op. 1'. Featuring The Brook Street Band

'A little-known East Anglian with a flair for synthesising violin sonatas, played with energy and finesse - The three members of The Brook Street Band perform with admirable engagement and subtlety here – robust where necessary, deft elsewhere – and have been most attractively recorded.'

Rachel Harris, violin
Tatty Theo
Carolyn Gibley, harpsichord

Here's a lengthy interview on Estonian radio station Klassikaraadio with pianist Eva Maria Doroszkowska who chats about the background and music on her recent critically acclaimed FHR release 'BALTIC TIDES' which features composers Lūcija GARŪTA (1902–1977) and Ester MÄGI (1922–2021).

Fookuses värske ja sisukas album "Baltic Tides", mille pianist Eva Maria Doroszkowska salvestas 2024. aasta kevadel Arvo Pärdi keskuses. Plaadil kõlab kahe 20. sajandi Balti naishelilooja Ester Mägi ja Lūcija Garūta klaverimuusika, millest mitmed teosed saavad siin oma esmasalvestuse.
