Experimental music as a physical experience carries its own clichés, but Arca’s has always been intensely corporeal,

Five years after the maximalist sweep of Kick, the Venezuelan artist returns with ###XX, an album that tunes directly into the body – ringing, buzzing, panting and breaking sounds designed to trigger different physical responses. “I surprised myself by the violence that is suggested in the music, as well as the tenderness and aftercare,” she says. Speaking to Connor Garel, Arca reflects on rage, heartbreak and catharsis.

By the time Arca released her self-titled album in 2017, her glitchy, bodily sound had already travelled far beyond her own music, through collaborations with Kelela, Frank Ocean and Björk. 

Her latest album, ###XX, pushes that sound further, embracing collage, chaos and constant recontextualisation. Photographed by Anders Edström and styled by Akeem Smith, Arca is similarly reframed here as she talks to Connor Garel about heartbreak, catharsis and the emotional depth of her recording process. “Everything about me just wants to embrace change now,” she says.
