New music from & Beibei Wang
There’s a real sense of play throughout the new album ’The Endless Dance’, epitomised by new track ’Awaken the Insects.’ Beibei Wang’s voice, is a key percussive element, heard in a rhythmic duet with bamboo clappers called Kuai Ban [快板]. At first, Beibei sounds angry and defiant, but she’s actually reciting a tongue-twister (which have a long tradition in Chinese comedic and performing artists) that she learnt as a child. “As soon as I showed it to my Chinese friends, they could not stop laughing”

If LYR have one itch they can’t stop scratching it’s the bewildering noise and colour of contemporary society, a world full of networking opportunities and communication devices where disconnectedness is the result; both musically and textually this track Blah! Blah! Blah! embodies that contradiction.
The album Dark Sky Reservation is out next week.

A love song, or a song of unrequited love set in the alienating and over-commercialised world of contemporary art. Two employees who work in the modern retail sector keep failing to connect, dwarfed and disillusioned by municipal culture, or simply too cool to break out of their allotted roles. Picasso’s shocking depiction of cruel warfare is neatly packaged as gift, heartfelt artworks are reduced to toys, leisure activities and domestic utensils, and feelings struggle to exist.

This was one of those songs concocted in the studio after we’d finished working for the day, and were just goofing around with a tune left in the demo box. Simon started ranting the storylines of corny sci-fi movies into the mic, curtailing each one with a weary Blah! Blah! Blah! Patrick picked up on the tone and mood of the piece - slightly menacing and dystopian - and Richard recorded a really catchy top line and chorus, and we were away. One of those moments of coalescence and spontaneity that can’t be anticipated or faked. I guess it’s about cliches in art, the etcetera etcetera of life, being exhausted by the burden of free choice but hypnotised and addicted to it at the same time.

In a world that seems to be being consumed by hatred and division, this is the antidote. Music crosses borders, boundaries and divisions to bring people together.

‘Painkiller’ is the third single to be lifted from ’s forthcoming album Let Us Clap. Bob Marley sang that when music hits, you feel no pain. In this song, Lamisi extends that idea — not rewriting it, but suggesting that music can go beyond and become a source of healing. “We wrote this song from the belief that music is a painkiller—it can succeed where words and medicine may fall short.”

The album Let Us Clap drops on 20 February.
