The nature of DC pension schemes, where the burden is on the individual to save and manage their investments, will naturally mean more people turn to targeted support at key points in their retirement journey.

This means providers are going to have to do more to provide the right kind of targeted support, and suggested they should work more closely with advisers.

Parkin explained: “With more people saving into DC pensions the responsibilities are going to lie more with the providers to direct pension savers in the right direction.

“It’s going to be interesting to see whether the industry works more with advisers to help direct people to different options, including to advice.”
