For many Autistic ( Neurotypical) people, neurodiversity is viewed is a concept and social movement that advocates for viewing autistic people as a variation of human wiring, rather than a disease. As such, neurodiversity activists reject the idea that autism should be cured, advocating instead for celebrating autistic forms of communication and self-expression, and for promoting support systems that allow autistic people to live as Autistic people." I accept this as my definition of Neurodiversity for this page. Vaccines do not and have never caused autism. We have 120+ peer review research articles and counting. This is not a debate, it is a fact. They are all neatly put into this update blog. “Please only listen and learn from the community. This "magazine" is spreading ignorant and dangerous misinformation. This is not how educated neurodivergent researchers and the community understand our experiences. Nothing about us without us is starting to slowly happen in research, clearly the OP "PhD" didn't get that memo and is spouting dated nature/nurture nonsense. Shame on ADDitude for regurgitating nonsense.

Environment indeed impacts Polyennic people (ADHD), but not by creating ADHD, but creating observable distress experiences. But it makes sense reading the "article". This "PhD" is an ADDitude panel member, and cites the dangerous Tangerine nonsense that paracetamol "risks ADHD". Another shameless neurotypical white privileged man with an agenda.”

Bri Guerra, Nonspeaking Advocate for Change

Before I could type I had to listen to people make me out to be some kind of subhuman; uninterested in others, in a different world, void of deep emotions and complex thoughts. I was a charity case or a burden. Never thought to be an equal and my perspective never considered.

While I sometimes become sad about not being able to talk and live more independently, what makes life so painful and tragic is actually the way people dehumanize, mistreat, and demean people like me.

If we could listen to nonspeakers and denounce hate speech against them, and allow them to lead the conversation about their own lives, the future for everyone will be much, much brighter. I love all of me, despite the many people who can't see me and make it so hard to live my best life.

Autie-biographical Comics

You can't love someone but hate their autism. It's a part of who we are. Yes, you can dislike parts of our autism, like I'm sure there are parts of other people you don't like. However, the parts of us you do love? They're a part of our autism too!

If you removed our autism you would remove us. Everything you love and hate about us would be gone. We'd fundamentally be completely different people. So if you love an autistic person, their autism is part of what you love about them.

[Image description: A three panel comic of Honeydew, autism and all, being loved. The comic is titled "All Of Me" and is made by Theresa Scovil.

Panel 1:
Narration says "I'm not loved in spite of my autism."
Honeydew talks a lot, the words "Blah blah blah" repeated over and over again.
Ky looks at them all lovey-dovey, with little hearts over their head.
Panel 2:
Narration says "Autism is a part of me."
Honeydew stands alone, and smiles peacefully with a gold infinity symbol on their shirt.
Panel 3:
Narration says "And all of me is loved."
Ky leans in, looking at Honeydew all lovey-dovey, with little hearts over their head.
Honeydew looks to them and smiles.]

Superb tips by Autisticality

It’s world mental health day today so I wanted to briefly touch on it and what is important for good mental wellbeing. As someone that has had a rollercoaster of a time in regards to my mental health, I know how hard it can be to get through dark times. But some things that can make a difference include:

✨ Setting boundaries (whether with work, friends or family). You are not the bad guy for setting boundaries, you are simply putting your health first. And those who disrespect those boundaries do not belong in your life until they do.

✨ Remove toxicity from your life. Whether it’s a friend that brings you down, a partner that doesn’t treat you right or a family member that simply makes you feel s**t. Once they are gone (though it might be hard to do) you will start to shine.

✨ Take time for self care. Self care comes in so many forms, whether physically such as going to the gym or spa or just decompressing with a hobby that you enjoy. Taking that time for yourself is vital to recharge and simply be happy.

✨ Take one day at a time. Something I struggled with for ages because I could only see the distant future and be overwhelmed with fear and anxiety that nothing would change or go my way. But by taking one day at a time you can be more fulfilled in your goals (no matter how small) and focus on things that truly need your attention.

✨ And lastly, remember you are worth being here. Everyone deserves to live, to be happy and live their life how they want to. No matter how hard things get, no matter how many thoughts tell you that you’re better off not alive, the truth is you matter. You have a right to a good life like anyone else. It may not be going good right now but things change and I promise once you get through the hardest times then you can overcome anything and be all the stronger for it.

Wishing everyone a good day and good life ❤️🥔

Aucademy - Education for everyone on Autistic experience

Sharing some important videos by non-traditional communicators.

Non-traditional communication should be valued and supported. Aucademy rejects the idea that any Autistic human should be labelled and dehumanised as "with profound autism". We want to challenge society's ideas about what constitutes a "worthy life" by platforming those in our community who are the most disabled by their environments.

1st video (in the comments) - A satirical video created by a disabled creator, the video is called "Whose voice is it anyway?". While the content is not about Autistic people, it's a powerful message about how we behave toward non-traditionally speaking/non-speaking people.

2nd video is by the late Mel Baggs (they/them) who passed away from likely respiratory failure. Mel communicated in non-traditional ways. This video highlights the need for us to learn *how* to listen to non-speaking people.

Mel says of their video:

"The first part is in my "native language," and then the second part provides a translation, or at least an explanation. This is not a look-at-the-autie gawking freakshow as much as it is a statement about what gets considered thought, intelligence, personhood, language, and communication, and what does not."

3rd video is an Aucademy favourite with Gregory Tino, titled "Apraxia & Synaesthesia: Gregory educates Aucademy". In this session, Gregory Tino discusses their experience of apraxia and synaesthesia.

At the time, Gregory was 29, and he is an unreliably speaking Autistic who learned to communicate using Spelling to Communicate (S2C) in 2017. He is an author of 4 books, an avid blogger, an advocate in two advocacy groups (SEEN and Spellers & Allies), and a member of the National Leadership Council of I-ASC. Gregory says he is proud to have autism.
