Rakes Progress

Rakes Progress rakesprogress magazine is all about the art of gardens, plants, flowers - the world outside your window

rakesprogress is as much a snapshot of the world beyond your computer's window as it is a guide to the tricky business of growing stuff. Flick through the pages and of course you'll see gardens, plants and flowers, but you'll also find photography, bees, tools, craft, veg, art, architecture, sheds, clothes, jam and, of course, rhubarb. Even if you never pick up a rake, if you want an antidote to the mad whirl of digital, there is something here for you.

Thank you and for a wonderful evening. This collaboration ‘A Gathering’ is in the words of “an exhibition that reflects the symbiotic relationship between a craftsperson and a chef. We have transformed the Michelin-starred restaurant into a gallery space of handcrafted works - from ceramics and wood to photography.”

Merlin Labron Johnson shares a deep connection through his commitment to craft and a profound sense of place . His philosophy embodies the principles of locality, seasonality, and craftsmanship and has led to Osip also being awarded the Michelin green star in 2023 - “As a team we are taking multiple steps to become a more sustainable restaurant and lower our impact on the environment. We never use single use plastics within the restaurant. We have a strong focus on becoming self-sufficient, growing our own produce across our organic farm and garden.”

Merlin Johnson’s approach as a chef apart from celebrating exquisite ingredients also celebrates regenerative and seasonal farming with ingredients grown just a few miles away. The restaurant sits tucked down a lane with views over the countryside and is beautiful in its simplicity and attention to detail.

The exhibition highlights how craft is rooted in the rhythms of the land, the integrity of ingredients, and the shared desire to tell a story of place through food, senses and art. The placement of the objects, photography and paintings offer up interesting conversations about what a gallery can be.

visit Osip if you can , (you can now stay there), not only because the food will blow you away but also because this exhibition is a delight.

Thorns Gallery officially opened today. ‘From Nature’ is the inaugural exhibition. Showing the work of three artists all with nature as a source of their work…from the mohair of the Karoo desert in huge textural tapestries to the wood and sculptural forms of and the Cornish clay of Janet Leach’s extraordinary pots and vessels. Formerly a cowshed, the building has been sensitively restored by and his partner into a stunning piece of architecture and sits in the most spectacular landscape near Semerwater, Yorkshire.

To mark the publication of The Rose Book, published by Phaidon, contributors to the book from the worlds of art, fashion and floral design will join for a revelatory discussion about the many diverse depictions of the world’s most iconic flower at the V&A tomorrow evening (12th June)

From a couture Dior gown and a rose-adorned Barbie to ancient mosaics and Victorian Valentine’s cards, discover the extraordinary ways the universally beloved bloom has been depicted through time and across cultures, both within and beyond the garden. Whether as a symbol of beauty and love, a political and religious icon, or an ornamental plant with countless cultivars, the rose has been an undeniable force in popular culture for millennia, from Ancient Greece to today.

Moderated by Rake’s Progress creative director Victoria Gaiger, the panel will consist of Shane Connolly, a floral designer, ambassador for sustainable floristry, and director of Shane Connolly & Company; Amy de la Haye, a dress historian, writer, curator, professor at London College of Fashion, and author of Ravishing: The Rose in Fashion; and Gill Saunders, former Senior Curator of Prints at the V&A and now an Honorary Senior Research Fellow in the V&A’s Research Institute who specialises in and has published widely on botanical illustration, the history of wallpaper, and 20th century and contemporary prints, drawings and paintings…. “John Keats died 200 years ago when he was a mere 45 years old. Many remember him for his odes, specifically Ode to a Nightingale, that capture so sublimely his increasing awareness of the brevity of life. But for me, it is his relationship with flowers that best illustrates his journey from apothecary to poet.”
