It’s always interesting how different press outlets report the same news!

This FT article isn’t particularly full of joy regarding the changes in employment law coming into effect in April or the ‘in favour of employees’ proposed employment rights bill.

Why is treating your employees like adults and having compassion for those going through life’s challenges as an employer so hard to get their head around?

Hardly anyone is trying to ‘get away’ with doing the bare minimum and providing support, compassion and understanding, builds loyalty, helping you to retain talented people who will get the job done.

We are the sandwich generation - delivering excellence in our careers; whilst being present for our children and caring for our parents (or others) and ourselves.

Life requires flexibility, which in my home means I do drop off and my husband does pick up; but we have the flexibility to swap or work from home if the other needs to change schedule for something important.

It also meant that I could work from the hospital when my mums chemo stopped working; to get precious time with her when she was still lucid. And so that I could stalk her Drs to get the answers you only get in person.

It’s short sighted to believe that if a persons job isn’t their only priority, they aren’t serious about their career and won’t be an asset to your business.

Having grown up policies and a culture that supports it, is essential to the success of your business.

My husband and I always have a pack of cards when we go out.

We’ve played blackjack (not 21) since practically the day we met 🙈 years ago!

Yes, we are a competitive pair! But while we play we discuss all sorts, make plans and build our relationship.

Today the cards came out while our girls were having fun at our local and gave us a chance to have a conversation without disruption, with a little trash talk on the side!

It is so important to connect with the people we work with; in business and personally.

How often do you have a conversation with your team members without disruption?

To lead effectively, it’s important to connect with your team and get to know them.

It’s how you discover what drives them and how to get the best out of them.

Do you have regular 1-2-1’s with your team?

In HR the little things are the big things!

Recently, I had a manager ask me why HR makes it so hard to dismiss someone who is underperforming.

My response was “It’s not hard, you just have to follow a process”

Often when I speak with managers regarding staff issues, they get frustrated when the advice that I’ve given is to go back and follow the process, but this is after they’ve told me that they have no written evidence of conversations that they’ve had with their underperforming team member!

You have to build your case.

Did you know that not following policy and process will make you automatically lose should your case go to Employment Tribunal?

Are your HR policies and processes upto date and ready for the legislation that will come in this year?

Comment POLICIES and I’ll send you the link to get you up to speed

In HR the little things are the big things.

Recently, I had a manager ask me why HR makes it so hard to dismiss someone who is underperforming.

You have to build your case.

Did you know that not following policy and process will make you automatically lose should your case go to Employment Tribunal?

This is why I’m so excited that some many people requested an employment law update - it shows you want to get all of your ducks in a row, so you can be confident in leading your teams and taking action when necessary.

It was my birthday this week - Thank you for all of the well wishes!

It’s the last of my 40’s - I know! Imagine I’m 49!!

When I turned 40, I wrote a list of 50 things that I wanted to do before 50, so it seemed like a good idea to review the list as I have just 12 months to complete it - although I think I should get an extra 18 months for the pandemic!

I’ve achieved the majority of them including - new house, running my business fulltime, family trips away, solo trip, attending bible school, building fabulous female friendships, running the London Marathon (I’ve actually completed it three times!).

I’m not sure I’ll get to spend a month in France perfecting my French this year and climbing Mount Kilimanjaro has been pushed for taking on my first 100K this July - I’d never even heard of ultra marathons when I was 40!

I didn’t think I’d lose both of my parents within 14 months and have to learn to navigate life without my biggest cheerleader - but if I’m honest the fragility of life has made me say yes to opportunities that I might have never tried.

Thanks to my wonderful running club I’m a fully fledged British Athletics run leader and have been doing some amazing projects with some running clothing brands.

But the item on my list that I’m most proud of is writing my first book; Leading for Growth, during the pandemic, whilst home schooling and launching it virtually. Developing effective, inclusive leaders and managers is definitely my passion.

So while there’s more to be done, I’m grateful.

Anyway, enough about me!

I asked my followers on LinkedIn and Instagram what FREE training you’d like as my birthday present to you and the outcome was - the Employment Law Update!

I’ll be giving you all the information that you need to be prepared for the April legislation and giving you a heads up for the other changes that are in the pipeline for 2025/2026 now that we have a change of government on Thursday, 13th February 2025 at 6:30pm GMT /1:30pm EST

I’ll post the sign up link shortly, but if you have any questions just pop them in the comments.

My client Sophie (name changed to save the innocent) runs a successful preschool business, but more than that, she's a wife, mother and an active contributor to her community.

When I was introduced to her she was tired from juggling ALL.THE.THINGS.

Her husband and children were complaining that she was always working (even on her days off her mobile phone never stopped ringing) and she couldn’t remember the last time she’d made it to the gym.

She was considering selling her business and going back into employment, even though her business was HER BIG DREAM.
It felt like it would be less demanding.

Have you ever felt like that?

The first time we sat down to talk, she told me about so many challenges and opportunities. I just knew that a dedicated HR Strategy Session was what she needed to get back on track (even if that track led to selling her business).

During the session using our unique systems, templates and processes, we were able to create a plan that gave her time back without sacrificing quality of service for her growing business.

This means so much more than just her professional success …

It also means her children get to see their mum for dinner and at their ballet recitals versus Face-Timing while she’s at the office.

This means so much more than just the legal security and retaining top talent …

It means freedom

A life

I want the same for you so for a very limited time I’m offering VIP sessions to get YOUR time back (and get a life!).

During YOUR VIP Session, we will:
- Clarify your business goals and how your team will support you to achieve them
- Pin down the right structure for growth, whether that's Contractors, Consultants, VA's or Employees
- Identify the interventions that are needed; e.g. recruitment, training, role changes, etc
- Walk you through the process and create an outline project plan
- Breakdown the process into specific tasks

The link to book VIP HR Strategy Session is in the comments, there are only a few slots left.
