FIRST TWO Ambassador Cruise Line WORLD OPEN PAIRS QUARTER FINAL BERTHS DECIDED
The England/Scotland partnership of Mervyn King and David Gourlay MBE were the first pair to secure a quarter final spot in this year's Cruise Line World Indoor Bowls Open Pairs Championship, after they came through against another England/Scotland pairing of Trevor Taylor and Connor Milne on a tie break 7-5, 4-7, 2-0.
There was little to separate both teams throughout the match with King/Gourlay scoring on three of the last four ends of the opening set.
In the second set, Taylor/Milne led throughout, only dropping three of the nine end set to send the match into a best of three end tie break decider, which went the way of King/Gourlay.
Gourlay, a three time winner of this title - winning in 2000 with Alex Marshall MBE and then back to back with Billy Jackson in 2006 and '07 - played superb, inch perfect deliveries with his last bowl on the first two ends of the tie break to seal their quarter final spot on Monday 13th January against Po Ting Hei and Jason Choi from Hong Kong.
In the second match of the day, 2017 beaten finalists Damian Doubler and Dan Salmon from Wales, who regularly qualify for this event, also signed off their opening match with a victory.
The Cardiff based bowlers came up against Sean Mawdsley and Blake Nairn - the Western Australian qualifiers and in a low scoring opening set the Welshmen scored singles on the last five ends to win 7-2.
In the second, after a plethora of heavy hitting, a run of 1, 3 and 2 mid game saw the Doubler/Salmon combo take a 7-3 lead but over the closing stages the Aussie looked poised to close the gap. They scored a single then held a double but an inch perfect draw from Salmon yielded a single and that was good enough to put the result beyond doubt at 8-4.
They return to the portable rink for their quarter final game tomorrow afternoon (Sunday 12th January) against three time winners Greg Harlow and Nick Brett (2014, '20 and '23).
