This unsettling plastered skull is part of a collection of seven Neolithic skulls found near Jericho, Palestine. The archaeologist Kathleen Kenyon, who uncovered this remarkable find, expressed her excitement by stating, "We realized with a thrill of discovery that we were looking at the portrait of a man who lived and died more than 9,000 years ago." Each skull was meticulously packed with earth and coated in plaster to recreate distinctive facial features such as ears and noses, with shells standing in for the eyes. Thought to represent a form of ancestor veneration, it remains uncertain why specific individuals were honored in this way. This particular skull belonged to a man in his forties, providing a chilling insight into our distant history.
