🍂 IMMUNITY, SEASONAL LIVING & CHINESE MEDICINE

I was going to continue my posts about perimenopause, but actually today I wanted to talk about something a little more pressing — immunity, coughs and colds!

There seem to be some pretty nasty bugs doing the rounds at the moment, knocking people off their feet for a week or more. Several friends and family members have been unwell recently, and this week it was my turn.

Fortunately, after two days of proper rest, I was feeling much better. I put this down, at least in part, to two things I’ve incorporated into my life.

🌿 LIVING IN TUNE WITH THE SEASONS

This is one of the fundamental principles of health in Chinese Medicine and something I’ve always tried to practise.

In Chinese Medicine, autumn is associated with the Lungs, which play an important role in our defensive Qi — the body’s ability to protect itself from external pathogens.

As we move towards winter, nature slows down, and we’re encouraged to do the same.

For me, this means changing how I exercise and look after myself:
- Less intense exercise, more gentle movement, stretching and walking.
- More meditative rest - think yin yoga, sound baths and reiki treatments
- Warming nourishing foods - think soups, stews and roasted root veg.

Winter isn’t traditionally a time to push ourselves harder. It’s a time to conserve energy, nourish the body and allow it to restore itself.

Of course, modern life doesn’t always make this easy, but I genuinely believe that constantly pushing through exhaustion does us no favours.

🍊 LIPOSOMAL VITAMIN C

The second thing I swear by is Zooki liposomal Vitamin C.

Research suggests that taking vitamin C regularly may reduce the duration and severity of colds. Liposomal delivery can improve vitamin C absorption, which is one reason I favour it.

And finally, when I feel the first hint of a cold coming on, I love fresh mint tea! 🌱

In Chinese Medicine, mint is traditionally used to support the body’s response to early symptoms of certain respiratory illnesses.

What are your tips for staying well this winter? ❄️

PERIMENOPAUSE MOOD: low → anxious → angry 🤯

One thing I wasn’t prepared for with perimenopause was how much it could affect my mood.

Some days I feel low and flat. Other days it’s anxiety — that horrible feeling that something is wrong when nothing actually is.

And then there’s the anger. 😬

Something tiny happens and suddenly my tolerance has completely disappeared.

So why?

During perimenopause, oestrogen and progesterone fluctuate rather than simply declining. These changes can affect brain chemistry, our stress response and emotional regulation.

Add poor sleep and fatigue and that emotional “buffer” can become much smaller.

So rather than telling myself to “calm down”, I’m trying to support my nervous system through it.

🌿 FUSHI MENOHARMONY
A perimenopause blend containing Shatavari, Brahmi and Ashwagandha — herbs traditionally used to support female wellbeing, resilience and stress.

🧠 KIKI HEALTH SERENITY
A mood-support blend containing Ashwagandha, Holy Basil, Lion’s Mane and other botanicals, alongside B vitamins and magnesium.

Supplements are only part of it. Acupuncture, getting outside, gentle movement, eating regularly and prioritising sleep all help me too.

And when I suddenly feel disproportionately anxious, tearful or furious, I’m learning to recognise:

“This might be perimenopause talking. I don’t have to react to this feeling immediately.”

Sometimes that little pause makes a big difference. 🤍

If mood changes are persistent, severe or affecting everyday life, please speak to your GP or menopause practitioner.

🌙 PERIMENOPAUSE: EXHAUSTED BUT CAN’T SLEEP?

Sleep has been one of the harder symptoms for me.

That horrible combination of feeling completely exhausted, but getting into bed and your body just won’t switch off.

And poor sleep affects so much more than the night — I notice it in my energy, concentration, mood and even how much I feel my aches and pains the following day.

A few things I use that help me:

🌙 Zooki Magnesium Bisglycinate
I take this in the evening. Magnesium supports normal nervous-system and muscle function, and I find it particularly helpful when my body feels tense and restless.

🌿 Fushi Wellbeing Shatavari
An Ayurvedic herb traditionally used to support women through different hormonal stages. For me, it’s part of a wider approach rather than something I expect to magically “balance my hormones”.

💧 Zooki Electrolytes
Not a sleep supplement, but staying properly hydrated makes a noticeable difference to how I feel overall — especially with travelling, exercise or warmer weather.

And supplements are only part of it.

Acupuncture, stretching, meditation, a cool bedroom, morning daylight and trying to calm my nervous system before bed all help too.

Perimenopause has really taught me that there isn’t one magic fix. It’s often lots of small things working together. 🤍

What’s affecting you most — sleep, joint pain, brain fog, anxiety or fatigue?

If you already use or would like to try any of the products I’ve mentioned, I have a couple of little savings you’re very welcome to use 🤍

We have personal experience of this and I can tell you it is a very traumatic, painful and ultimately sad outcome that you don’t really ever get over. There is acceptance but that missing piece and that sadness never really disappears so to all those in similar situations/ going through the same thing I see you and send you so much love - you are never alone xx

This week is World Childless Week. Sending love to the people who long to be parents, but can’t have children for various reasons.

💉 BEFORE YOU INJECT THAT PEPTIDE…

BPC-157. TB-500. MOTS-C. GHK-Cu. CJC-1295.

Injectable peptides are suddenly everywhere in longevity, fitness and biohacking — promoted for healing, recovery, fat loss, better skin and healthy ageing.

And some of the science is genuinely interesting.

But there’s something getting lost in the hype:

Promising research ≠ proven treatment.

For several peptides currently being self-injected, good-quality human safety and efficacy data remain limited. Animal or laboratory research can be exciting — but it doesn’t automatically tell us what will happen in humans.

And there’s another question:

⚠️ WHAT’S ACTUALLY IN THE VIAL?

When an injectable peptide is bought online rather than supplied as an appropriately regulated medicine, there may be questions around purity, concentration, sterility, contamination, storage and even whether the vial contains what the label claims.

Injection also bypasses some of the body’s normal protective barriers, making sterility particularly important.

🧪 And “research use only” does NOT mean proven safe for humans.

Regulators have raised concerns about a number of peptides circulating within the compounding and online peptide market because adequate human safety information simply isn’t available.

This doesn’t mean peptide medicine is nonsense.

Peptides are an exciting area of research, and some peptide-based medicines are already properly regulated, established treatments.

But there’s a huge difference between:

🔬 “Scientists are studying this molecule.”

and

💉 “Therefore I should buy it online and inject it.”

I love emerging longevity science. But curiosity and caution can coexist.

Before injecting anything, ask:

What human evidence exists?
Is it a licensed medicine?
Who manufactured it?
Do I actually know what’s in that vial?
And do we know the long-term risks?

The future of peptide medicine could be fascinating.

But your body doesn’t need to become the clinical trial.

🌦️ WHEN THE WEATHER CHANGES OVERNIGHT… YOUR BODY NOTICES TOO

We’re travelling along the Dorset coast in Osito, and the weather has certainly changed! Yesterday was warm and sunny; today we’ve had chilly wind, rain and sunshine — sometimes within the same hour. ☀️🌧️💨

In Chinese Medicine, these seasonal transitions matter. The body is continually adapting to its environment, and sudden changes in temperature, wind and damp can be challenging — particularly when we’re still living as though it’s summer.

🍂 WIND, COLD & DAMP

Traditionally, Wind, Cold and Damp are external influences associated with symptoms such as stiffness, headaches, congestion, feeling chilled or heavy, sluggish digestion and that general “run-down” feeling.

Autumn is also associated with the Lung system and Wei Qi — our protective or defensive Qi.

So as the weather changes:

🍲 Choose more warm, cooked foods
🧣 Protect your neck and upper back from chilly winds
☕ Swap iced drinks for warm water or herbal teas
🌾 Eat regular meals to support the Spleen & Stomach
😴 Allow a little more rest as the days shorten
🍐 Bring in seasonal foods such as pears, apples, squash, mushrooms and root vegetables

And perhaps most importantly, don’t wait for the calendar to tell you the season has changed.

Notice what’s happening outside and adapt.

For us in Dorset, that currently means sunglasses at lunchtime and a waterproof and extra layer by 4pm. 😂

Chinese Medicine reminds us that living seasonally means adapting with our environment rather than fighting against it. 🌿

🍂 BACK TO SCHOOL. BACK TO THE OFFICE. BACK TO… EVERYONE’S GERMS?

September brings a familiar shift.

Children are back at school, offices get busier, commutes return — and suddenly it feels like everyone has a cold.

It’s not your imagination. As we move towards autumn, we spend more time indoors and in closer contact, making it easier for respiratory viruses to spread. Changes in daylight, sleep, stress and routine can also affect the systems that support our immune health.

So rather than waiting until you feel ill, now is a good time to strengthen the foundations. 🌿

✨ YOUR SEPTEMBER IMMUNE-SUPPORT CHECKLIST

🥝 Eat the rainbow
Fruit, vegetables, herbs, legumes, nuts and seeds provide vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients while supporting a diverse gut microbiome.

🦠 Look after your gut
Prioritise fibre-rich plant foods and fermented foods alongside plenty of variety.

😴 Protect your sleep
Sleep and immune function are closely connected. Consistently getting too little can affect immune responses.

🚶‍♀️ Keep moving
Regular moderate exercise supports overall health and immune function — and getting outside gives you valuable daylight too.

💧 Stay hydrated
It’s surprisingly easy to drink less as the weather cools.

🧼 Remember the basics
Hand washing, fresh air and good ventilation still matter when bugs are circulating.

✨ WHAT’S IN MY WELLBEING CUPBOARD?

🍊 Zooki Liposomal Vitamin C — vitamin C contributes to normal immune function and protection from oxidative stress.

💛 Zooki Zinc — another important nutrient for normal immune function.

🦠 Zooki Biotics+ — something I use alongside a varied, fibre-rich diet to support gut health.

🌱 KIKI Health Nature’s Living Superfood — an easy way to add a wider variety of plant-based nutrients when life gets busy.

Supplements are the supporting cast, not the whole story.

Food, sleep, movement, daylight, stress management and good hygiene are still the foundations.

September is the perfect time to give those foundations a little more attention. 🍂🌿

SAVE this for your September wellbeing reset.

Supplements should not replace a varied, balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.
