When a doctor speaks to you with disrespect, but you still put the patient first. 🩺

Sometimes we only show the tired nurse coming home from a long shift.

But let’s show the other side too.

The nurse who comes home to a husband who understands that caring for people is her job and caring for her is his job

With dementia, don’t immediately label distressed behaviour as “challenging behaviour.” Ask yourself: “What is the patient trying to communicate?

Patient Safety and Safeguarding.

Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. Nurses must protect patients from abuse, neglect, exploitation and harm by recognising concerns, listening to patients, documenting accurately, and reporting concerns through the appropriate safeguarding procedures. Patient safety should always come first.

A patient tells you they’re being abused and asks you not to tell anyone. What should you do? 👀

To every nurse working with student nurses… 🩺🎓

Please remember: student nurses are students.

Some nurses expect a student to walk onto the ward already knowing how to do everything. They get frustrated when the student asks questions or doesn’t know something they haven’t been taught yet.

Yes, students should come prepared. Yes, they should have basic knowledge. And yes, they should take responsibility for their learning.

But please don’t forget that your role is also to teach.

A student nurse should be able to say:

“I’m not sure how to do that. Can you show me?”

“I haven’t done this before.”

“Can I watch you first?”

“Can you explain why we’re doing it this way?”

Without being made to feel stupid.

Correct them when they are wrong. Give them constructive feedback. Challenge their knowledge. Encourage them to think critically.

But don’t expect them to have the knowledge and experience of a registered nurse when they haven’t qualified yet.

We were all students once.

The way you treat a student today could influence the kind of nurse they become tomorrow.

So, to every nurse working with students:
Teach them. Challenge them. Correct them. Encourage them.

Don’t just expect them to know everything. ❤️🩺

Always remove air bubbles from an IV syringe before administering the medication.

Don’t trust anyone!!

Always act according to your hospital policy.

Covering medication error is putting a patient at risk and also risking your license.

đź’Š If you give a medication, document it accurately and promptly.

“An unsigned MAR can create confusion and potentially lead to a duplicate dose. Never assume. Always check, communicate and document.”
