From Sierra Leone 🇸🇱 to the Global Stage 🌎

Mariyam Lorba Konneh, Miss World Sierra Leone 2026, has today departed the shores of Sierra Leone with her heart filled with beauty, purpose and determination to bring the crown 👑 home, as she proudly represents the country at the 73rd Miss World Pageant in Vietnam.

A former AYV Miss University Sierra Leone 2022, entrepreneur and final-year Banking and Finance student at IPAM, Mariyam has distinguished herself through her entrepreneurial and humanitarian work, supporting women and young people through business opportunities, skills development and menstrual hygiene initiatives.

As she takes Sierra Leone’s beauty, culture and aspirations to the global stage, Mariyam carries with her the hopes and support of a nation. Her journey represents more than a quest for the crown, it is an opportunity to inspire young Sierra Leoneans and showcase the talent, resilience and potential of the country to the world. 🇸🇱👑🌍

Sierra Leoneans from home and abroad
have offered prayers, best wishes and cultural farewell to Mariyam Konneh at a special “Send - Off” ceremony held at the Radisson Blu Hotel, hosted by the Miss Sierra Leone Ltd Board, together with the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs and the National Tourist Board.

Congratulations, Mariyam!

We are proud of you and wish you every success on the global stage. ❤️🇸🇱

Lawyers dae cry for Justice, wetin common man go cry for now?👨🏾‍🦯
Natin nor common na Salone

The press release clearly explained the decision, but much of the conversation has shifted away from the facts.

Mariyam should not be blamed for circumstances she did not create. The Miss Salone organizers did not hold a new pageant to select a representative for this year’s Miss World competition.

The reigning Miss Sierra Leone had already represented the country at the previous Miss World pageant. With no new national winner in place, the organizers selected another eligible contestant to represent Sierra Leone.

The focus of the discussion should be on why a new pageant was not held in time, rather than on the individual who has been given the responsibility to represent the country.

Mariyam has less than two months to prepare for Miss World. By her own account and from what has been publicly shared, the selection was not something she had been preparing for over an extended period. Preparing for an international pageant within that timeframe requires significant planning, resources, and commitment.

The decision has now been made. The priority should be to allow Sierra Leone’s representative the opportunity to prepare and compete to the best of her ability.

Mariyam Lorba Konneh has been officially selected as Miss World Sierra Leone 2026 and will represent Sierra Leone at the 73rd Miss World Pageant in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, with the grand finale set for September 5, 2026.

The Miss Sierra Leone Board made the decision in consultation with the Miss World Organisation after the 2026 national pageant could not be held in time. As the First Runner-Up of Miss Sierra Leone 2025, Mariyam was eligible under Miss World rules to step in as the country’s official representative.

A former AYV Miss University Sierra Leone 2022, the 21-year-old entrepreneur and philanthropist is recognized for empowering women and young people through job creation, business support, skills training, and menstrual hygiene initiatives.

The Board described Mariyam as an intelligent, graceful, and dedicated leader who will proudly represent Sierra Leone on the global stage.

I remember when I first joined social media back then I was almost as young as Almon Sall's daughter, that was in 2009/2010.

My first social media platform was Facebook. Back then, we could just post pictures, chat, and connect with friends and family worldwide. Tho at that time I was unchecked and was not properly censored by parents, I was lucky as well because the social media space was less toxic than it is now.

Now, we see a lot of toxicity across different social media spaces. Almond Sall’s daughter is a victim of today's uncensorship on our social media platforms for underage kids. The Nigerian government is currently considering such rules and consulting the public, but no final legislation has been passed. I believe Sierra Leone should follow suit, to safeguard the lives and innocence of young kids getting exposed to malicious people, sites, and platforms.

Unfortunately, a lot of people are negatively sharing the video, which causes more harm than good. I just pray she finds strength in all this chaos, as well as learns from this moment.

To Almon, you've always been doing great, whether representing Sierra Leone or taking care of your daughter, may this moment also serve as an opportunity to make certain changes going forward, may God bless you and the family.
