Your child loves writing. But do they need a creative writing class or a writing coach? The answer depends on what they’re trying to achieve.

If they want to build confidence, explore different types of writing, practise regularly and meet other young writers, a creative writing class could be the perfect fit.

But if they’re already saying, “I want to finish my book!”, they may need something more focused: personalised feedback, manuscript development, milestones and coaching to help them reach The End.

And sometimes, they need both, just at different stages.

In my latest blog post, I break down the differences between creative writing classes and writing coaching for children, the questions parents should ask before choosing, and how to recognise what your young writer needs next.

Read the full article and discover the right next step for your child.

Screens can entertain children for hours, but their imagination deserves time to come alive too.

🌟 Encourage them to swap a little scrolling for storytelling: creating characters, building worlds and turning their own ideas into something they can be proud of.

At the Accomplish Press Creative Writing Club, we make writing engaging, social and fun while helping young writers develop these skills!

Writing Tips: A scene can be clear and engaging for the reader while leaving every character exactly where they started. One practical check is to compare two things at the end of the scene

• What does the reader understand now?
• What does each character understand now?
• Who has learned, decided, noticed or misunderstood something?
• What has changed in the relationships or stakes?

If the scene is doing work for the reader but not for any character, it may need a stronger character-level turn. That could be a decision, a discovery, a new suspicion, a shift in power or even a carefully planted misunderstanding.

The goal is not for every scene to contain a dramatic twist. The goal is for something meaningful to move for someone inside the story.

Save this for your next manuscript review. What changes for your characters by the end of your current scene?

Brainstorming sessions are a foundational aspect of writing. Before the characters come alive and the story begins to take shape, there’s that exciting stage where anything is possible.

Giving young writers time to explore different ideas, ask “what if?”, make connections and even come up with something completely unexpected helps take the pressure off getting everything right straight away.

Sometimes, the wildest idea on the page is the beginning of a brilliant story!

- The Parlour Wife by Foluso Agbaje 📖

"Kehinde must put everything on the line to find herself during a time of war.

Lagos, 1939

With the announcement of World War Two and a change that sends shockwaves through her family, Kehinde is forced to put aside her dreams of writing and become the third wife of Mr Ogunjobi.

Kehinde makes her peace by selling snacks at a small market. When she gets the chance to assist the leader of the Lagos Women’s Market Association, fighting for the rights the British are trying to take away, Kehinde finally feels useful again.

But if her husband finds out he’ll abandon her.

Can Kehinde find the courage to fight for herself and the other women of Lagos? Or will she remain a caged bird, a parlour wife, forever.

A poignant story of a young Nigerian woman, living with the consequences of a war her country didn’t choose" (Goodreads).
