DO WHAT THE WORD SAYS
(Honour Your Parents As The Word Instructs)
TO THE BIBLE - Ephesians 6:1-3
“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise: “that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.”
LET’S TALK
Someone once asked, “How powerful are the blessings or curses spoken by parents over their children?” According to the Bible, they can be very powerful and have impactful implications. Throughout Scripture, we see examples where what parents said—either blessings or curses—came to pass.
As someone who is born again, it’s important to understand that God has called you into a life of blessings. The Bible says in 1 Peter 3:9 that we were called to inherit a blessing. That means God’s plan for you is one of goodness, not harm.
If your parents spoke a curse over you before you gave your life to Christ, that curse no longer has power over you now that you’re born again. You belong to Jesus, and His blessing overrides every curse. However, it’s still important to make peace with your parents. If it’s not possible to reconcile—or it’s too difficult—speak with your pastor. They can guide you with wisdom and help you take the right steps.
Now, what if you were already born again when your parents spoke something negative or cursed you? Generally, it won’t have an effect. But if you were living outside God’s Word—disobeying or ignoring what the Bible teaches— you may find yourself in a vulnerable place spiritually. That’s when harm can creep in because stepping outside of God’s protection is like breaking a protective fence.
Remember the story of the Israelites in Egypt? When God sent the final plague, He told His people to mark their doorposts with the blood of a lamb. That mark protected them from harm. In the same way, staying in God’s Word and living by it keeps you safe under His covering. The Bible also says in Ecclesiastes 10:8 NIV, “whoever breaks through a wall will be bitten by a serpent.” In other words, disobedience can open doors to things God never intended for you to experience.
God wants you to live in peace—especially with your parents. The Bible says in Ephesians 6:1–3, quoting Exodus 20:12 and Deuteronomy 5:16 NIV, “Honor your father and your mother… that your days may be long, and that it may be well with you.” This is the first commandment that comes with a promise.
