The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, has passed on. He was 83 years old.
The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III , The imperial Majesty was the longest-reigning ruler of the kingdom since his great-grandfather, Oba Atiba Atobatele founded New Oyo in the 1830s.
A direct descendant of Oranyan (founder of the Old Oyo Empire), Adeyemi III was also a boxer before ascending the throne of his fathers after the Nigerian Civil War. He won So many Championships awards in during his life time.
Crowned on November 18, 1970, while succeeding Oba Gbadegesin Ladigbolu I, Iku Baba Yeye, as he was known popularly, ruled for 51 years and 5 months. The longest reign since Alaafin Oluaso in the 1400s. He was the 43rd Alaafin of Oyo .
Adeyemi III joined his ancestors on Friday, April 22, 2022, at the Afe Babalola University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti, the capital of Ekiti State in South-West Nigeria.
Adeyemi died at the Afe Babalola University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti.
The late Alaafin’s monarch’s remains was received at Idi-Igba, Oyo town early Saturday morning.
Palace sources confirmed that traditional rites had begun and he was buried on early Saturday morning. 23.04.2022
Adeyemi ruled for 52 years before his demise, making him the longest-reigning Alaafin. Iku baba yeye was a great legendary king of Yoruba land , who was proud of his culture and traditions.
By tradition, the head of the Oyomesi, Basorun of Oyo, High Chief Yusuf Ayoola, would take over pending the appointment of a new Alaafin.
Basorun is also expected to brief the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, before an official announcement.
The late Alaafin of Oyo was from the Adeyemi branch of the Alowolodu family and He was born on October 15, 1938.
During his late childhood stage, he lived briefly at Iseyin. His favourite meal was Amala and Abula from Oyo town .
Adeyemi III was the son of Oba Adeyemi II, the former Alaafin of Oyo who was deposed and sent into exile in 1954 for having sympathy for the National Council of Nigerian Citizens.
He succeeded Alaafin Gbadegesin Ladigbolu II in 1970 and was crowned on January 14, 1971.
Adeyemi’s death came after the demise of the Soun of Ogbomoso, Jimoh Oyewumi, and the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Saliu Adetunji, who died on December 12, 2021, and January 2, 2022, respectively.
