The Working Class Scot Who Became Bond
Sean Connery didn’t audition for James Bond in the traditional sense. He showed up to a lunch with producers Broccoli and Saltzman in unpressed clothes, straight off a run of odd jobs including milkman, lorry driver, and coffin polisher.
What sealed it wasn’t the meal. It was the walk back to his car. Ian Fleming hated the choice at first, calling him an overgrown stunt man, until he saw Dr No and changed his mind for good, even giving Bond Scottish blood in his next novel.
On screen Connery wore Anthony Sinclair suits cut to his frame, soft shoulders, tapered trousers, nothing rigid. Off screen he swapped it all for tweed jackets and cashmere turtlenecks, proof that comfort read better than cost ever could.
